BM fans: why is dimmu "false" BM?

i think people call them "false" because they don't sound like traditional black metal anymore, ie darkthrone, immortal, etc...
I don't consider them false, just non-traditional
and Spiritual Black Dimensions owns

i think they slay. and SBD does own. so does PEM for that matter.

to be honest, i don't see much to traditional BM, if you consider Burzum, Immortal, Mayhem to be it. with the exception of Emperor and dissection, most of that stuff was pretty unremarkable.

Umm, I just heard one of their albums, godless savage garden, not really my thing but I heard alot of good remarks of them so I guess they are good for what they do. I also heard they are featured on the "Hell Boy" soundtrack and that they took a different musical direction than their earlier music...I am looking forward to hearing this.

Nicodemix is going to take your behymen for saying that.

Dimmu doesn't have the neclassical aesthetic (that does not mean symphonic instruments) of tr00 and kvlt black metal, nor the atmospheric repetition and such things. Aesthetically, they're kinda closer to death metal with the chaotic structures, but they're not riff-driven. They're kind of...a big mess.

The first part, about why they're not black metal, may be inaccurate, as I'm not a particularly big black metal fan.

i dont think Dimmu Borgir is false Black Metal, because they arent Black metal at all, plain and simple. Stormblast and For All Tid were good, EDT was ok, but everything else is really boring and emotionless.

Dimmu are (as I see it) melodic thrash (or melodic death) with black metal elements (blastbeats and vocals that sound like Shagrath has throat cancer) I wouldn't lay down and labels of "sell-out" or anything (although I'm sure there are many out there who would), but Dimmu traditionally have marketed their music to larger audiences and Nuclear Blast have done some great work promoting their stuff... They are an entertaining band if that's what you want, but it lacks the atmosphere and feeling that traditional black metal carries and its marketed towards "headbangers" who drinks beer on the weekends and regularly attend metal concerts.

Not everybody can get into "traditional" black metal (I hate using the word "true" as a description or even moreso "tr00" in any context except for a joking one). The most probable reason that you probobly can't stand Darkthrone and Burzum because you don't understand it.

All of that said, I like Dimmu Borgir as well. They are certainly good entertainment, and I would go see them live if they came around my parts. They're good clean fun.

I love For All Tid through EDT. After that they just mixed in stuff and it ends up like a mess. I wouldn't call them Black Metal, but Melodic Symphonic Metal (I hate Genres ugh). But the past two cds have just been a mess with the shitty orchestra and keyboards making the guitar sound not even listenable. I still have hope for them for one more cd, but It will probably have no guitar or bass, and just have computerized vocals and that other crap. The name will be Pentagram Paradox Phizzzurp.

ndx thanks for the very measured response, you told me what i was looking for (and suspected). being a mostly death metal guy, death cult armageddon caught my ear with some killer riffs( cataclysm children ) and well done orchestral elements (i don't care what anyone says). i guess it did because it was really "blackened death thrash."

as for burzum and darkthrone, they were just too raw. i guess that's what it is. the black metal i am coming to love is Emperor's Nightside Eclipse. don't get me wrong i like prometheus, it is just really a different band. along with dissection, they are my favorite BM bands, since dimmu doesnt count.

on another note(pun intended), has anyone here heard the new cd by akercocke? fucking slays.

Yeah, I love how Dimmu just throws three random unrelated words together for album titles. Blasphemical Extemperaneous Goatsex!

Random fact: When Shagrath chose the title for PEM, he didn't actually know what a Puritan was. He had to have it explained to him by a Terrorizer interviewer.
