Well, they announced they lose all 37 points they have and are fined $500000, so now they cant make the finals.

I cant believe they are penalising the players for the club screwing up :(

Oh well, at least Penrith wont finish last now

fuck yeah, thats a good, firm punishment

FUCK I HATE BRAITH ANASTA!

i would so like to kill him......

But how were the players to know if they went over the salary cap? He just sees, say $350000 on his contract and goes "Yep, thats good enough" and gets paid it. The CLUB went over the salary cap, not the players... Its not a players fault if everyone else was getting paid really well too (IMHO)

Though I guess on the other hand they HAD to do this, or the salary cap would have been a joke, I mean, they admitted they tried to deceive the NRL outright...

All this means is one more dud team that will get knocked out of the 8 in the first week is going to make the finals!

The players should be policing their own team, then. If one bloke's getting $350,000 it doesn't take a genius to multiply that by however many and get an idea as to whether the team's over the cap...

Personally I think each team should be investigated for this kind of thing - it's a crooked system for sure!

(The NRL itself could do with looking into as well, I wager;))

Its not the players fault though! Some players are earning more than others, should each player check into everyone elses bank account to make sure its all above board? :)

(Id say a few clubs would be in trouble if they really investigated, but the point is, they have no PROOF other clubs are doing it, thats the problem! :) )

The players don't know how much each other gets, and it's nobody's business except the NRL and the club. And players get paid differently based on how good they are, whether or not they're rep players, etc.

My thoughts on the punishment? Harsh, but they had to do something. The players and fans suffer through no fault of their own, true, but if it means that no other club will try such subterfuge again for fear of being punished like this, then that's a good thing. I just hope the media and the NRL make sure that the players are treated with the respect they deserve - regardless of whether or not they cheated the cap, they were the most dominant club we've seen in years this year.

Mark that is a ridiculous thing to say. In financial terms, individual players only need to look out for themselves. It's not their responsibility to make sure the club is not exceeding the cap. Nor would the players, i wager, talk about how much they are getting paid amongst each other. In all my years in the workforce, i have never discussed my income with workmates. So for starters they wouldnt have any idea how much the club is paying in total salaries.

I too think it is unfair too punish the players !!
But saying that, just a big fine wouldn't have been enough punishment. Otherwise it would give the impression if your club has the money , they can buy a premiership.
I really feel sorry for they players and their supporters. It would kill me if this happend to the eels last year. Watching your team only loose 3 games and then being booted !!
Maybe the eels have a chance now ;)

I am going to watch the doggies play the raiders this Sunday, and i hope the dogs smash 'em. The players have only got their pride left to play for.

I think the NRL penalty is fair, as a warning to other clubs how seriously they take breaches of the salary cap. Even though a hard cap is unrealistic and clubs will always find a way, somehow, to get their players extra money. Anyone who thinks other clubs are innocent of this type of activity is naive. Ive seen first hand the crazy shit that goes on in country rugby league to slip players extra money, so the scale of what must go in the NRL is scary.

What is unfair, is that the bulldogs players are being penalised for something some old geezer in a suit has done.

I agree that other clubs would have breached the salary cap as well over the past few seasons, but not by quite as much as the Dogs have over the last 2 years. I think George Piggins who in the press has sighted Parramatta and Newcastle as 2 other clubs who are over the cap should shut up. Even though he could be right (he has no evidence so far) he is hurting the game he is mean't to love alot !!!

I watched the footy show last night, that reporter Kate whatshername who broke the news of the cap breach showed some bravery or stupidity showing her face, and then having nothing intelligent to say.

Now that I live in Victoria I hear basically nothing about League !!
It is killing me !! I am such a huge fan of the eels !!!
Can anyone tell me what has happend to the eels ?? Is McFadden injured or just dropped ?? Is Dykes out injured with his shoulder for the seanson ?? What has happend to Solamona, will he be back this year ??;Why can't smith see that Drew plays better at hooker the half and that Ben Kusto is an idiot :p

When's the last time anyone had anything intelligent to say on the Footy Show? :D

I can't say I feel sorry for their fans, from what I've heard about them. Dogs alright. It's good that the NRL was so hard on them (the club).

Kate McClymont was on NRL On Fox as well (on Wednesday night), and after that I would be very surprised if she didn't get a few death threats from disgruntled Doggies fans. She was sitting next to Steve Price, and I think he did an admirable job in not getting up and belting her.

George Piggins is a blight on rugby league and the sooner he is out of the picture the better. I probably wouldn't hate Souths so much if he wasn't involved - he thinks is bigger than the game, which it certainly isn't. As long as he's still involved in league, then he will continue to make unfounded statements about other teams and bring the game into disrepute. He must be stopped at all costs.

Hanso, as far as I know Brad Drew didn't play hooker until he joined the Eels. I think he had a great game at half against Souths, which probably isn't saying much - Shane Webcke probably would have a great game at 5/8 against them if given the chance, and Mark Tookey probably would have torn them apart on the wing :)

Yep, Adam Dykes is out for the season, I believe. Not sure about Solomona, though.

That's an extremely ignorant thing to say. I am a Bulldogs fan - what have you heard about ME?

Spiff, you'd be right about the death threats. One of my first reactions to her was to rip her head off. But i am sure there'll be some crazy dogs fan who'll actually be prepared to do it.

My question for the NRL, and I've posed this on other boards, is what do they do if/when they discover other teams have been rorting the system as well? If they find out in six months that Brisbane or Newcastle or the Sharks have been overpaying their players and the season's over, what do they do then?
