Who the fuck listens to CHILDREN OF BODOM? Seriously, what kind of audience do they attract? It’s confusing because on one hand, you’ve got the mall crowd gromits, flicking through the Guitar World magazines and letching at their beloved ‘Wildchild’ Laiho sandwiched between Steve Vai & Zakk Wylde. And then on the other hand, you’ve got the nerdy power metal freaks. Why BODOM specifically get lumped into power metal more than the average melodic-death metal band is beyond me. The fact is, I’m listening to this EP and I’m reminded of IN FLAMES circa Clayman with an added drunken, party vibe. Power metal fans normally avoid anything with ‘extreme vocals’ except when it comes to BODOM and maybe BAL-SAGOTH. It’s pretty funny to imagine mallcore kids rubbing shoulders with HAMMERFALL geeks. Go figure.

So at the end of the day, this release will work wonders for the ADD crowd needing a ritalin suppository fix between bouts of D&D and Wrestlemania. I tell ya, this EP is like a complete whiplash frenzy of guitar fills, drum fills, keyboard twiddles, left speaker – right speaker, fade in fade out, scream & shout at the top of your lungs type madness. The whole neo-classical ‘NIGHTWISH with rough vocals’ element from Follow the Reaper is now all but dropped. There are four songs on the EP, and predictably enough nowadays, two of which are covers – “Bed of Nails” by Alice Cooper, and “She is Beautiful” by that cunt Andrew WK. Yeah, it’s THAT song again. Ugh.

I’ll admit, the Alice Cooper cover is fantastic. OK, true, the fact that I like the original helps (hell, I’m going to throw on my Trash album as soon as I’m done here), but normally I detest cover versions of famous songs redone with screamy/whiny vocals. They’re just not normally interchangeable in my opinion (although the recent ARCH ENEMY version of “Kill with Power” was pretty fucking cool). Nevertheless, “Bed of Nails” works wonders and the fact that they throw in 30 seconds of blast beats at the end there really wraps it up quite uniquely.

I’m not sure how Laiho fell into the good books over at Guitar World or Guitar Player because he’s really not anything that special, but it’s great publicity for BODOM since that typically equates to an automatic guest slot at OzzFest. In any case, he can indeed play, but most of the twiddle is based on molesting the whammy bar and throwing out endless dive bombs. Put it this way, he’s not exactly in the same league as Steve Vai and countless other shredders, but I blame the publications for not venturing further than the end of their noses. At the end of the day, BODOM are in the public eye and it’s not long before they start poaching more adolescent kids away from watching American/Pop Idol.

Pop metal music by kids, for kids.

5/10

Motherfucker said Guitar SCHOOL. You know that shit been outta print for years, nikkuh?!?!! :loco:

Yeah, it's Guitar World then. I'll change it. But still,

Guitar School >>>> Guitar World

Uh oh, just waiting for someone to post Bodom transcriptions to this thread now...

I never understood why Guitar School was 50x times better, I mean they practically had the same staff working on both rags. Remember when Guitar School changed to MAXIMUM GUITAR? That totally sucked because I think they had 2 last issues and it was gone. No goodbyes or anything, in fact I think they took about $8 worth of subscription from me too! Fuckerz.

This band isn't worth talking about. The last sentence of the review says it all. Fucking pop metal bullshit.

This band is about as cool as Justin Timberlake.

Justin Timberlake puts on one helluva live performance, seriously. I'd go see him again long before I went to see Bodom. :Spin:

yeah, hotter chicks at a Timberlake concert. At Bodom, you get pale obese goth chicks that wear those butterfly wings from Hot Topic.

JK ... how can you give this one a "serious" review?
Again, like with HOM, COB does not take themselves as seriously as I think you take them ... this is moron metal and should be reviewed as such.
You are reviewing this with the same criteria as reviewing ... oh I don't know ... one of those pretentious bands you guys listen to :loco:

I'll say that Hatebreeder had a few good songs, but they just get boring very quickly. I think the band's fans take CoB more seriously than the actual band does, but regardless, the band is pure bubblegum, offering no lasting effect on the listener.

For constantly praised musicians, they sure do write bland music, but hey, some people like the bland, so whatever.

But I will say that forum wars are lame.

Yeah I'm not to keen on another forced forum war, I'm only into the organic variety. :dopey:

Bodom isn't as bad as I would like them to be, at least they have a bit of musical talent instead of chugging away on detuned powerchords like monkeys. Hmm, I shouldn't insult monkeys that way. Seamonkeys, there that's better.

You think this was a "serious" review?? Did you read it? :hypno: :loco:

Anyway, I review all albums with the same exact criteria!! And there's no evidence to suggest that Children of Bodom are in on the joke -- or is there? These guys HEADLINE festivals, so that's pretty serious to me (unlike someone self-releasing a record to about 300 fans with a world tour circuit of 3 local pubs).

HoM is a bad analogy - M.O.D perhaps or Weird Al Yankovic maybe, but quite honestly, I didn't think albums like "Follow the Reaper" were supposed to be joke records. I think it's pretty serious in its intent, so I can't chastise the band because of the fans.

I mean, it's not like I discussed their political beliefs, ideaology, or guitar tablature. :tickled:
