new to death metal? try out the following...

Possessed - Seven Churches
Malevolent Creation - The Ten Commandments
Suffocation - Human Waste
Death - Scream Bloody Gore
Entombed - Left Hand Path
Deicide - Deicide
Morbid Angel - Altars of Madness

and Cadaver's In Pains for its distinctive sound/ambience:kickass:

Why not merge the pre-existing old-school death metal thread with this one?

So does Pestilence - Consuming Impulse.

Today in the mail came my Pestilence -mallevs maleficarum reissue. I might like this more than CP. I always forget about Pestilence.

Also I like the term 'classic death metal'. It's kinda like how judas priest and iron maiden are classic to metal just applied to old school death metal. It sets appart the real deal and who is B rated.

i havnt heard of any of the bands listed...nor found any torrents for them (HELP!)

download soulseek (google it)

few of my favorites (more obvious choices)

early hypocrisy
early deicide
early death
immolation
morbid angel
demilich
demigod - slumber is indeed great

and severed survival which is one of the most significant death metal albums.

Old School Death albums I have been listening to lately.

gorguts-considered dead
morgoth-cursed

I've been listening to Seance's Saltrubbed Eyes heaps since the day it clicked with me. Really great stuff. The band's debut Fornever Laid to Rest shows some sparks of brilliance but just isn't as memorable and flowing as SE, imo.
I guess, that's another classic landmark worth mentioning.

I'm listening to Morpheus Son of Hypnos and I must say it has different sound than most of the older Swedish death metal material. I love the vocals so much.

Most important swedish releases

Necrophobic - The Nocturnal Silence
Grave - Into The Grave
Entombed - Left Hand Path
Dismember - Like An Ever Flowing Stream
Unleashed - Where No Life Dwells
Carnage - Dark Recollections
God Macabre - The Winterlong

Get these or lose.

Merciless - The Awakening
Therion - Beyond Sanctorum (...Of Darkness, too)
At the Gates - The Red in the Sky is Ours
Grotesque - In the Embrace of Evil

All of these belong on such a list. The Winterlong is great, but is in no way more important than any of these.
