Bah... I couldn't believe the dichotomy between the first Andromeda CD and the second. They were doing fine, then they decide to make technical-prowess > song-crafting. I got a very phony vibe from the album, like the band was trying too hard to sound wacky and complex... and the music was pure shite. But then again, I was never ignorant enough to assume that there weren't people out there that love it...

I agree about SX being better than Malmsteen (they actually write their solos to fit the songs and not vice versa), who they are clearly indebted to, though it's become less obvious...which brings up a point: do so-called clone bands only become worthwhile when they outgrow their influences?

Some say that Fish-era Marillion surpassed early Genesis (there's no question they copied them). Although "Misplaced Childhood" is my favorite album ever, the rest don't quite stack up to "The Lamb...", "Selling England...", "Nursery Cryme", etc.

I've seen Watain be called a Dissection clone as well, but I must say that Watain are a hell of a lot better.

I actually consider Watain to be somewhat the succesors to Dissection. Watain are one of the few excellent bands left playing that style of black metal as well.

Wigrid is quite similar to Burzum, but I think he still makes quality music.

Nargaroth's "Geliebte des Regens" is also a stlye very similar to that on "Filosofem" and it is good too.

Of course some people get totally carried away and say all BM bands not from Norway are clones of Norwegian bands, personally I think Norway makes the worst BM.

It's kind of annoying that nearly every other (if not more) review I've read on any BM band that they get accused of ripping off Darkthrone/Burzum/Mayhem or no matter what are compared those 3 bands.

Oh yeah, the Swedish Pest is quite similar to Darkthrone "Under a Funeral Moon" and "Panzerfaust," but of course they too are good.

don't know about cloning but for blatant shit rip offs no-one tops stampin ground for ripping off slayer, some of the riffs on thier last album are practically identical to ones on south of heaven, its embarrassing

i find the death + black metal scenes to be about 90% interchangable right now
won't even bother naming bands as i generally forget them soon after hearing them

Anekdoten is from Sweden. I think most KC fans will disagree with me, but I like 'em better. I still love KC, but Anekdoten is pure bliss for me.

Symphony X is better than Yngwie Malmsteen

While SX had a very strong Malmsteen influence on their first few discs, I wouldn't consider them clones. And I would agree with the sentiments of the board, SX is vastly superior to Malmsteen. I even prefer Romeo to Malmsteen, straight up. I grew up on Yngwie and was always waiting on him to mature and expand on what he did on his debut. He never has. He's a one trick pony. It's a good trick, but it's old and tired at this point.

First band that came to mind was Threat Signal, which are kind of a Fear Factory clone with heavy Meshuggah influence. Pretty good. Recent review is in the zine section, and it's free from Gomek.

Btw, Godsmack STARTED OUT LITERALLY as a New England (Boston) based AIC tribute band, who stopped the AIC songs when they, err, wrote new material, that sounded a little like Metallica gone grungey. Whatever to them.
