Comparing OPETH and METALLICA: A field study.

While listening to 'Deliverance' today, I realized that the album is comparable to Metallica's '...And Justice For All'. Both have a sound you have to get used to, is their heaviest album, has long songs, have reminiscent parts (in "Deliverance", there are many places where the drumming reminded me of Lars Ulrich and the Metallica songs "...And Justice for All" and "To Live is to Die"), and mix the best of their back catalogue into one piece of magnificent metal.
Looking at it this way, 'Blackwater Park' becomes the equivalent of 'Metallica' (black album), where something is missing; the songs are not complex enough, not demanding enough, just a little tad boring, and has less interesting acoustic work than before.

I think BWP was their most technical, with the most finger twisting riffs on any Opeth album, they also play in odd times. The use of the E bow throughout the album is incredible, the riffs fucking groove and move more than any Opeth album...The last riff in BWP is one of the greatest riffs of all time, just for the title track alone BWP is godly. The acoustic stuff was the most depressing and dark acoustic stuff they have ever written, the guitar solos were exquisite and tasteful. The songwriting was by far the most well written, well composed stuff Mikael has ever done. BWP is and will remain their crowning achievment as guitar players, song writers, and muscians.

I am now starting to see the beauty in Deliverance, although its still miniscule, and it takes ALOT of time to hit/understand. I'm sorry, as far as an overall musical journey, BWP takes the trophy, and BWP isnt even my favorite Opeth album...Its just DAMN good.

I do agree its their "Black" album...but not in the musical sence, in a more "breaking into the mainstream sence".

I don't think you can compare BWP to Black Album, since Black Album does meet the criteria you posted, but BWP does not. In my opinion, BWP was very good, neither boring nor simple. I haven't listened to AJFA in a long while so I'm not sure if I can compare it to Deliverance, but I'll do that now.

I love both Metallica and Opeth - My two favs band of all time.
And Metallica is still going strong, the new album will be heavy as fuck and something different.

I remember liking Metallica along with Iron Maiden back in the 80's when I was just a wee pup (teenegaer)..Metallica blows now..Opeth are still relevant..I undertand that there are a few thrash riffs on Deliverance but lesser so than on Metallica's And Justice For All..I think Opeth and Metallica are very different metal bands..Metallica WERE a thrash band, and Opeth are a progressive death/doom band..Opeth offer more depth with a melancholy feel to thier progressive,complex songwriting.. Metallica WERE the one of the best 80's thrash bands (at least here in the USA)..Lopez is a better drummer than Ulrich who really sucks by the way, and Metallica are just hard rock for rednecks now, as Metallica thrashed more than Opeth,(back then) BUT Opeth were far more diverse with elements of classical acoustic interludes, black/death metal and folk..Opeth played slower than Metallica, but Metallica play really slow now, lol.Mike Arkenfeldt was once a Metallica fan as we all were , but I hate Metalica now..Hails..-l-

I think lars is one of the worst metal drummers of all time, but compare him to most mainstream drummers and he still is slightly better. He did seem to learn to play the drums for AJFA. By the way, I heard that Lars had to have an oxygen tank next to his drums for the recording of that album so he could endure the faster parts.

I don't know why Lars gets such a bad rap--I think his drumming suited the music very well. Just because he's not a show-off doesn't mean he can't fit the music. Show-offs are ass, but any non-drummer thinks they're awesome because they don't know any better.

This is probably one of the most ignorant comments about drummers I've ever read. How do you compare a drummer who plays only metal to a "mainstream" drummer (whatever that is...I guess you mean drummers who play in popular bands)? Different music=different rhythms. You're not going to hear the drummer from The Dave Matthews Band (who is a hell of a lot better than any metal drummer I've heard, mind you) play insanely fast--that's not the style. Just because a drummer plays fast tunes doesn't make him better than one who plays slower tunes.

I don't want to generalize and sound like a hypocrite, but more often than not "mainstream" drummers display a lot more talent than metal drummers. Most of the best drummers on the scene today play a variety of musical styles, and metal usually isn't one of them--which isn't to say they couldn't handle it, but most of them probably don't consider it sophisticated enough (for the record, I don't share this opinion).

What the hell are you talking about? Why is this dumb? Why is this uneducated? I have listened to metal since I first heard "Ride the Lightning" in 1984, and Opeth since "Morningrise" so I guess it's not uneducated, although opinions of course and always vary. You have to take this with a grain of salt;

I'm not saying that James and Mikael sound alike or whatever, but if you can't find any similarities between 'Deliverance' and '...And Justice for All' you're plain deaf.

Lars Ulrich is indeed a crap drummer *live*, but the drumming, the way it is composed and presented on '...And Justice for All', is awesome and all I suggest is that there maybe is a little inspiration from this album. I know many drummers have been inspired by this particular album.

And yeah, I agree that Metallica has been crap since 1990
