Controversial opinions on metal

Hard rock? What? I'm certainly not hearing Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, or Aerosmith in there.

Yeah, I do not hear much Manowar in a lot of current metal bands today. Those bands are not metal, right? You just happen to be the most closed-minded,genre tag-obsessed hipster ever.

Hard rock refers to the blues rock style of those bands I mentioned, it isn't Slipknot, it isn't Disturbed, it is Van Halen, Led Zep, Deep Purple, Thin Lizzy, etc.

You are so fucking stupid.

Also: pot, kettle, black, calling, etc.

With you, it's always "[genre]-influenced" or "this band has a feeling like [genre]" and the hipster part speaks for itself.

I understand what you are saying there but I was pointing out that Mort Divine's idea of hard rock is totally wrong and that his points lack any real meaning besides the basic idea of the founding hard rock bands.

Whatever... who cares... This specifically defining genres thing is tiring. I think of bands such as Godsmack, Disturbed, and some of the psuedo metal acts (Five Finger Death Punch, among others) as Hard Rock, and frankly, beyond that.. I don't care that much.

I can't help but notice that no one has even tried to articulate which new elements Slipknot has supposedly acquired to be redeemed from the "-core" classification, and be accepted into the more favourable "hard rock" genre...

I think in terms of analogy. Heavy Metal evolved into Extreme Metal just as old school Hard Rock (Zep, Aerosmith, Deep Purple) evolved into modern Hard Rock like Disturbed and Papa Roach. Anything lighter than modern Hard Rock I just called Modern Rock, obviously.

I haven't heard the new Slipknot song, but it should be judged comparatively to contemporary Hard Rock bands.

Nothing about Slipknot is hard rock whatsoever. Calling these bands the evolution of anything is to give them far too much credit. If anything, bands like Slipknot, Disturbed & Papa Roach are an example of the dumbing down, commercialisation and devolution of modern metal. This does not make them hard rock by default. Just because they suck doesn't mean they should be disassociated with metal and lumped in with another genre entirely.
