The Chasm's first two are interesting but difficult listens.

sure, i get why someone who worships incantation wouldn't like the chasm. i'm in the opposite camp really, i like a little melody in my DM. oppressive murk has its place but it works more as background music for me, it doesn't keep my attention.



i have the opposite opinion. they've been getting more and more streamlined, predictable and bloated over the years. still one of the best bands around though.

have you really heard their first two BTW? i wouldn't expect you to like them more than DEATHCULT but maybe i'm wrong.

i still sorta like DISCOURAGED ONES and TONIGHT'S DECISION despite the awkward songwriting and moping about, but they got really shitty later on. i can imagine them being dreadful live.

I know their later material isn't popular with the trve crowd, and bands are usually in the habit of playing mostly newer stuff, so that would make them terrible by default.

More specifically and generally what I meant was that music of a melancholy nature isn't something I want to "share", and that would include having the band physically present. Plus, I can see how that type of music doesn't translate into a live venue presentation. The melancholy thing also goes for most of the BM that I listen to - absolutely no reason to see it live.

Katatonia is fucking incredible. There isnt one thing in their discography I do not like, except for that acoustic album...

I will say the first time I saw them live I was really disappointed...Disappointed in how fucking gay their fans are. No movement. No energy. No nothing.

I like everything after Brave Murder Day.

Im the opposite. I like Dance of December Souls and BMD, and thats it. Their sound changed and they got much more melancholy, and it reminds me of the type of stuff that emo teenagers who suck at life choose to off themselves to. Whereas with the older stuff I get the feeling of catharsis through isolation. To me BMD was their peak, and simultaneously their turning point into constant paced and depressive boring crap.

The Chasm is great. Procession, Conjuration, and Farseeing are my favorites. Like Ozz, Deathcult doesnt really grab me.

I like some Incantation, but it doesnt hold my attention throughout. And yes, they're samey throughout their discography

Post BMD emo rock sucks.

Luckily you don't have to imagine anything about Katatonia live. Just go watch them on Youtube. Some, not all, of the performances are stellar, but that's like any band. I think they have tons of energy live and most of the crowds seem to be into them.

I thought it was good, but not their best.

I liked Night Is The New Day better.

That's the thing with melancholy music though. What are you supposed to "do" to it? You're not going to be moshing to Idle Blood.

I totally hear you, but fuck man, no one even sang along or head banged. Even on more aggressive songs like My Twin, Leaders, Forsaker etc.
