Controversial opinion? Some of Kirk Hammett's guitar solos and riffs on the early albums could be classified as neoclassical metal.

I just listened to Kill Em All on my drive to school and back today, and it made me realize how samey 90% of the solos are. I mean, they're still pretty damn good for being the same few ideas over and over, but the leads on the next three albums are so much better. No wonder Hammett wanted to do some neoclassical stuff after probably being commanded by Lars to replicate Mustaine's solos.

So, I tried revisiting Seventh Son of a Seventh Son a while ago. Honestly, I still think it's underwhelming and, at times, really grating. The album marks the beginning of Iron Maiden taking on some utterly ridiculous habits when it comes to their songwriting and one of them that absolutely stands out is the excruciating amount of times the chorus happens to repeat in any given track. This makes the tracks (and the album) quite stale and artificially lengthens the album in order to make it appear "ahem" EPIC . However, I've heard many metal fans heap a metric ton of praise on it most of the time. Probably due to this supposedly being their peak.

I've also heard some (not on this forum, though) proclaim that this is when Iron Maiden "got progressive". No. If we're really about to put SSoaSS in the same vein of '80s progressive/power metal, then the album utterly pales in comparison to anything released by Dark Quarterer, Queensryche, Crimson Glory, X Japan, Heir Apparent, etc. At least with those bands, I know the compositions justify the length. That's why Rime of the Ancient Mariner was good. You would have thought they knew that, judging by that song. As far as '80s Maiden goes, you're pretty much better off with everything preceding that album.

While there are some bright sections that show genuinely good writing and performance, this album, when judged as a whole, is a ponderous, slow, ungainly bore.

Yep, very overrated album. The riffing is really poor too, lots of beat-counting 'ONE and a TWO and a THREE a' riffs and generic galloping, just not that many ideas. I do think it has some of their best leads and harmonies though, lots of guitar porn even if the songwriting was going downhill. Title track pretty much does Hangar 18 two years before the fact.

It would be a good description for a lot of Maiden post-SSoaSS but not for their material prior.

Seventh Son of a Seventh Son is a good album but Can I Play With Madness is a ridiculous track. It basically consists merely of choruses.

I remember that album having some of Bruce's best vocal performances. Haven't listened to it in years, so i could be wrong.

And i somewhat agree with J. They're not anywhere near as good of a band as most people make them out to be.
