If you like death more than black, check out Soulside Journey (which is just their best album period, IMO); A Blaze In The Northern Sky also retains some noticeable DM trappings. Most fans will tell you that their best purely black metal release is Transilvanian Hunger, although Under A Funeral Moon is also quite good (I like it better).

But yeah, I pretty much agree with v5 here, soulside is win.

Darkthrone is very basic, raw, primitive black metal, which purists believe is how black metal should be; the whole minimalism deal. Personally, I don't find it very appealing.

I think you'll dig A Blaze in the Northern Sky, then. And The Cult Is Alive is worth checking out too.

I disagree, and that album is not raw at all; the production is fantastically balanced...it's just loud as fuck and they drove the treble through the fucking roof.
