Controversial opinions on metal

It means bland, pedestrian, unexciting, yawnworthy in the context presented here. But if you wanna call pure DM vanilla, go right ahead there champ. It seems like a bit of a fruity descriptor to me.

Like i said it means ordinary, standard, regular etc .... look it up for yourself. And yes early Death and Morbid Angel is vanilla death metal just as early Megadeth, Testament, Exodus and such are vanilla thrash and so on. It's not that complicated.

I'm not going to bother with this anymore. Goodnight y'all.

No such thing as a mix. If brutal death metal is technical, it's just technical brutal death metal. There's no such thing as brutalized tech death.

To be fair, most brutal death metal bands with technical flair tend to be a shitton better than when not. For me, bdm adds a bit of organic flair to the music. It comes off more of a cyborg with rotting flesh instead of a full fledged robot playing death metal...or maybe I'm still drunk from last night.

That's a random group of bands to compare.

No it isn't you retard. You probably watch old lady skat porn on a Mac laptop inside of a independently owned coffee house in San Francisco thinking your all hip and cool while doing it. Fuck you.

Brain Drill > Every band you like.

I'd still take Manilla Road over Obscura tbh. At least Manilla Road has a few moments of greatness, even if they're buried under tons of mediocrity.

The vocals are fine, and much better than Obscura's vocals. Manilla Road's problem is that Mark Shelton can barely write a riff, let alone an entire song.

If im not mistaken, Dying Fetus' newer stuff is referred to both as BDM and TDM. Same can be said for Defeated Sanity.

Which bands are considered tech-death?
I name-dropped a few bands. Eugenics is definitely technical enough to be considered brutal TDM, but like krow said a lot of the BDM is technical .... well at least the good stuff, not the generic slam garbage.

I dunno. The best MR riff I'm aware of would be The Fires of Mars, but that one is almost difficult to even call a riff when it's punctuated with guitar fills that don't even really repeat themselves. And that's admittedly an amazing song and I'd be a big fan if most of their music ventured out of the norm a bit further. I'm sure he's written a few good ones here and there, but most of the stuff is so simplistic and uninspiring. But the bigger issue than a lack of riffs is how he arranges them like a thrash band circa 1983 might, and when he actually tries playing thrash on Out of the Abyss the results are so awful.
