@NFU: I have never flamed you for your opinion. All I'm wondering is how you can tell someone that their opinion is just plain wrong.

Which do I like better...a chocolate sundae with jimmies, chocolate syrup, and a cherry on top or just plain vanilla ice cream? I would take vanilla everytime. Sure the sundae has more to it and may be sweeter etc. etc. but I enjoy the pure simplicity of just plain vanilla much better. How is that different than Deadwing and Damnation? Listening to Damnation gives me more pleasure than listening to Deadwing just like eating the vanilla ice cream gives me more pleasure than the sundae. The OP asks which you like better. That is an opinion. Nobody is right or wrong here. People have different opinions than you sometimes you know?

im not saying his opinion is wrong. that would imply that i feel damnation isnt a worthy album whatsoever. which is absolutely not true. i think damnation is a great album. BUT compared to deadwing...its more shallow (no pun intended), weaker lyrics, weaker compositions, semi monotonous in style, etc etc. a better example for your ice cream would be: "i prefer plain regular vanilla to a homemade whipped vanilla bean creme with sugar crystals on it." see where im going with this?

Yea, I understand what you're saying. But all those things you list are opinions. I happen to like Damnation's lyrics better than Deadwing's. Damnation may be a bit monotonous I'll give you that but I still like it better than Deadwing. Although I would prefer the homemade vanilla bean to the regular.

ive said from the start that everything ive been saying is just my opinion. I know it is...but if i cant take pride and confidence in how i feel strongly about something, then whats the point of having an opinion on anything?

You're not entitled to your own opinion. You're entitled to my opinion.

@NineFeetUnderground: I may be hostile, but you can't say it's not merited. I like Damnation better. All those things you say may be true (although I really disagree about Deadwing's lyrics being better), but it doesn't change the fact that I like Damnation better. Go back and read the original question: 'Which one do you like better?' I said which one I liked better. I'm not alone in my opinion, so I don't know why you're singling me out. I never said, 'Hey NineFeetUnderground I can't believe you like DEADWING better omg you must not have listened to Damnation enough I can't believe you don't get it!!!' and that's basically what you're doing with me. THAT is why I'm getting hostile -- because your insistence that your OPINION is OBJECTIVELY correct in a SUBJECTIVE (and it IS subjective - again, the question is, 'Which do you like better?') argument is EXTREMELY annoying. I never got on your case for your opinions, so again, please stop doing that with me. Of course I will listen to Deadwing more, and in time I may change my mind, but even if that happens, it doesn't mean that you're right, because no matter what, there will still be people who will ALWAYS like Damnation better, because it's all about their subjective tastes, which have nothing to do with the questionable facts (since they're just your opinions after all!) that you posit about this matter. It doesn't bother me that you think Deadwing is a better album, so there is utterly NO REASON why it should seemingly bother you so much that I prefer Damnation.

I just find it funny that you thought i was flaming you...more of a mocking taunt if anything.

Damnation ain't perfect; hell, i know that. But neither is Deadwing. At times i get the feeling that it tries to hard to combine different styles and musical elements, without always making any of them particularly good. Yes, it attempted far more than Damnation, but i refuse to give it a shiny gold star just for that. You can try as much as you want, but the songs still have to be good songs. The song Deadwing works. But then it is followed by Shallow, which i find very dull. Arriving Somewhere But Not Here is fantastic, but Open Car is hum-ho.

Damnation is just a good mellow cd that, while straight forward, is very satisfying. Its the Opeth pop cd, sure, but thats what i like about it.

ps. the husky voiced guy in Deadwing sounds so much like Tricky i had to check the booklet just to make sure it wasn't.

stop being such a hippy. youre welcome to scream and degrade me about my tastes all youd like. in fact, i welcome it...it will make things more interesting. this is a metal forum, not some sort of koom-by-ah chanting faggot farm...or maybe thats what your'e shooting for.

secondly, i never said you didnt listen to deadwing enough. you very well could have listened to it 300 times...i just think its not registering.

LMFAO.....

kind of like the tribal drums on closure?

or the start stop vocal of the verses on in my time of need?

or the attempted spaciness of weakness?

or the circus melody of to rid the disease?

or just the redundancy and self plagiarism many of the riffs and melodies have all across the album?

;)

(again....i like the album a lot....but its starting to get fairly overrated in this thread.)

Heh, I like Closure (though the concert version is far better), enjoy the vocals of IMTON (nice idea to have them out of time with the melody like that), think Weakness is vastly underrated, dont know what circus melody you are on about, and don't even know what the hell you mean by 'redundancy' when talking about music. Seriously, how the hell can you have a redundant riff?

*begins to wonder if you are just making this all up as you go along*

ps. the more i listen to Deadwing, the more i prefer the other PT albums i have.

redundancy...meaning EVERY DAMNATION RIFF SOUNDS VERY SIMILIAR TO THE OTHER DAMNATION RIFFS. am i the only one who has noticed this? very little variation in style or technique. thus: semi weak tracks often times.

the circus melody: 4:00 on to rid the disease. if ANYONE hears the term "circus melody on damnation" and doesnt know what im referring to, they obviously dont have enough draw on this record to join in on this discussion.

and even if you like the offbeat vocals against the music on in my time of need...that doesnt change the fact that it sounds like poo.
