I had a hard time getting over death vocals. I couldn't stand them. I got into In Flames cause their guitar work is fucking great, you can't not like it. The only obstacle for me was the vocals. Now I've grown to like death vocals. It's definately an aquired taste but I must say that I am a proponent of melody, and good singing enriches that melody. After all music is just melody, which brings me to my next point. I hate brutal death. Yes its fast, yes its heavy, and yes its not the easiest stuff to play at times, but it lacks melody and is dead to me. I think their should be more singing in Metal. I think most bands just find a guy who can scream because its easier than getting a good singer. I enjoy death metal because there are cool death metal bands. I would have to say Opeth and In Flames are the marijuana of death vocals.
But check out Falconer, they aren't death metal, they are power metal but its fucking great b/c their singer is fuckin phenominal. Singing beats growling any time, their is more feeling and emotion. The only emotion a growl can express is being pissed off, which the reason all of us listen to metal. At one point or another our lives got fucked up or some shit happened and we got mad. Metal is almost thereputic, you can't be pissed off all the time you know. Ok, Ok, maybe at Slayer, but thats it.
