Death Metal

=But Hip-Hop (or rap) is in no way shape or form, music. It's people speaking, fast. And their "instrument" is a soundboard.....
No.

(ignore idiotic montage)

If you think the voice isn't an instrument, by the way, then your opinion on music is simply invalid. If you think good hip-hop doesn't require talent you're fucking dumb. And if you don't think it's music then you have no clue what the word "music" means.

At least soul, jazz has actual people playing REAL instruments. Not a piece of electronics producing sounds...

Keyboards: not a real instrument.

You can pretty much liken it to putting together notes on your cell phone and calling yourself an "artist".

So you're saying that what matters is not the sounds you make but how you make them?
I'm sorry if anyone disagrees with me but seriously. Anything that doesn't involve at least one REAL instrument doesn't deserve the right to be called "music"
mu⋅sic
/ˈmyuzɪk/ Show Spelled Pronunciation [myoo-zik] Show IPA Pronunciation
–noun
1. an art of sound in time that expresses ideas and emotions in significant forms through the elements of rhythm, melody, harmony, and color.
That said, the voice is an instrument. And beyond that, rap music uses drums, which are an instrument. If you respond to that that programmed drums are not a real instrument I'll be forced to search for some facepalm images. Beyond that, a lot of this stuff features guitars and stuff.

Even Kid Rock (he plays guitar) has real instruments in his songs...he at least fucking tries. I can tolerate some of his songs...
Kid Rock is white trash shit for people so severely impaired, through a combination of redneck beer, inbreeding, and innate retardation, that they think that some shirtless douchebag in a cowboy hat is worthy of awards.
My rebuttal is always, "At least my bands play real instruments." They can never reply to that, ever. :Smug:
Because the only reply would be that you're a clueless would-be-elitist bitch who has no idea what an instrument is.

Not saying you are, but if you said that to me, that's what I'd say to you.

No offense, but that sounds lame. Of course, I approve of Metalocalypse as something that may bring more people into metal, and better yet into playing metal drums and moving to Brookline MA, but it fucking irritates me (having never seen it) because it increases the number of people who try and talk to me about death metal thinking that Dethklok are representative of the genre...

Considering I said that I don't really care for the "band"on CD, no offense taken. Show was fun, and Soilent Green is fucking awesome. Simple as that.

If you had said, Soul, Jazz, classical or opera, I would have to agree you have descent taste in music. But Hip-Hop (or rap) is in no way shape or form, music. It's people speaking, fast. And their "instrument" is a soundboard.....

This is such an idiotic statement. Thankfully WeAreInFlames summed it up quite nicely, using probably my favorite IT song... nice...

I agree with nearly all of WAIF's comments but seriously, programmed drums an instrument? that is stupid.

If you are SINGING yes, but talking fast is by no means music. Sorry. That's calling an auctioneer a musician. He's got talent to talk so fast, that I will agree to but it's still not music.

Keyboards: not a real instrument.

Keyboards is, it's derives from a piano. This is an instrument. It has prerecorded beats to which you can add to your music, but it still requires some musical knowledge to operate.

What I am saying is a recorder we used in grade school requires more musical talent to use, then a soundboard

The voice is, I didn't say voice wasn't. Don't twist my words. It requires years of practice, and a natural talent to sing. I used a reference, but you happened to look past that.

Kid Rock is white trash shit for people so severely impaired, through a combination of redneck beer, inbreeding, and innate retardation, that they think that some shirtless douchebag in a cowboy hat is worthy of awards.

I never said it was good music, I said I could tolerate it. Catchy tunes getting stuck your head happens with all kinds of music. FFS I was 14 when ''I touch myself" came out, I sang it all the time. Not because it was a EPICALLY AWESOME SONG, but because it was catchy. Catchy doesn't always mean good.

Because the only reply would be that you're a clueless would-be-elitist bitch who has no idea what an instrument is.

Get used to it darlin, I am a bitch and twice the MASSHOLE you could ever be.
I do know what music is, I was in band throughout jr high and high school. I played the flute, which is epically metal

Not saying you are, but if you said that to me, that's what I'd say to you.

Yes you are.

i saw this video once on mtv of the 'masterful amazing producer' timbaland in his studio with 50 cent. He played 3 keys on this keyboard and 50 cent said that would be his next song.

Someone please explain to me how that's music? Treat me like a retard and explain.

sound appealing to somebody's ear/mind = music, simple as that

So then I guess death growls aren't music? Tom Waits is not a musician because he doesn't *sing* in the classical sense? Music and melody are NOT the same thing.

lol wot. What do you think hip hop producers use to program beats with? Your whole argument is based off a whole load of nonsense...

A soundboard is not a musical instrument. You don't compose music with it. You mix music with it. Hip hop producers that don't work with live musicians (ALOT of them do, and alot of these musicians like Questlove can outplay most metal drummers) use midi keyboards...

.......

For one thing, equating 50 Cent and Timbaland to Hip Hop is like equating Slipknot and Korn to metal.

You don't know what good music is. Not that I do, but no such a thing exists. It's all based off of one's subjective perception. You're entitled to dislike hip hop, but idiotic to act like a complete tool and spread misinformation about the genre...

That was my point. A soundboard is basically a giant computer, with pre-recorded sounds....

Wow jeez... no it isn't... What the hell are you talking about?

soundboard.jpg

^^ this is a soundboard... you MIX music with it... it has nothing whatsoever to do with musical composition, and it is nothing like a giant computer...

Where on earth did you get this from....I am saying TALKING FAST! Isn't singing.

They use a soundboard....In my youth, I was into the rap/hip-hop things for a while  :O
I went to a friends "recording" session. The entire song was done a computer.

All I have ever heard from most hip hop and rap is pre-recorded sounds from other songs or computer generated beats being used. Why do you listen to metal if hip-hop is so much better?

You're entitled to dislike hip hop, but idiotic to act like a complete tool and spread misinformation about the genre... Then again, reading some of the nonsensical crap you've spewed in the political thread I think you might just be a troll/bot.
Good music, is everyone's own opinion. I hate anything Metallica has done in recent years..others like it. To each there own. MY POINT was for the music that is done completely from a computer isn't music imo. You cannot deny that a lot of rap/hip-hop songs steal beats from music done by other artists already. I did not say all of it was crap I SAID MOST! I will give credit where credit is due, if it's due. But I am sorry if I cannot give credit to 3 or 4 beats being played over and over in a song with someone talking fast as music.
As for my political opinions, well that is another thing that everyone is entitled to. Not many agree with me, not like I care either. I will continue to believe what I believe and my opinions change with my knowledge. The more I know the more my opinions change.

You might be shocked to hear, I actually listen to stuff outside of metal. Seeing how you think I am so idiotic and a tool did you say. Mainly what I do listen to is old school jazz, soul and REALLY old country. A friend of mine has even got me listening to some old Japanese music. I also listen to classical, mostly when I read, but as I learn the sheer genius behind some of it, I want to listen more.

I'm sorry if my opinion differs from yours and you feel the need to call me names to prove your point. But here is something to prove mine.

Did you read my post (can you read? lol...)? A soundboard =/= a computer... It is also impossible to compose music with a soundboard...

All I have ever heard from most hip hop and rap is pre-recorded sounds from other songs or computer generated beats being used. Why do you listen to metal if hip-hop is so much better?

Because I love metal as well as I do classical, jazz, prog rock, post rock, shoegaze, hardcore, drone, powerviolence, d-beat, industrial, ambient, etc and I try not to be a closed-minded tool?

You cannot deny that a lot of rap/hip-hop songs steal beats from music done by other artists already.

Watch me. There are tons and tons of hip hop artists that either program/compose their own beats or use live instruments. The ones that do use samples from other pieces of music do it in an artistc/poetic context.

I did not say all of it was crap I SAID MOST! I will give credit where credit is due, if it's due. But I am sorry if I cannot give credit to 3 or 4 beats being played over and over in a song with someone talking fast as music.

Here's my thing. You can listen to whatever you want. In fact, I don't even care that you dislike hip hop, as you are certainly allowed to. What I take charge against, is the fact that you are talking out of your ass. You don't know what a soundboard is, you probably don't know what a midi keyboard/controller is, you've probably never heard any real hip hop, just the mainstream MTV stuff (some of which I do happen to like), and you continue your sentimental jargon on everyone else because you simply don't "get" genre.

I'm sorry if my opinion differs from yours and you feel the need to call me names to prove your point. But here is something to prove mine.

No it's not that your opinion differs from mine. It's the fact that you are spreading misinformation about the genre rather than saying "I think hip hop sucks" and leaving it at that. You just make huge blanket assumptions with no factual accuracy.

And I'm a pretty nice guy and it's tough to get me to call you an idiot, but I cannot believe an intelligent human being says the stuff you say on this forum...

Anyways I'm done here. The thread has been derailed enough.

Some food for thought... sit in on a modern metal mix session and note how many bands these days use drum samples (look up the term "sound replacing"). Almost all of them do. Amon Amarth inculded.

Wow those are lame.....haha...

Real hip hop - no music samples here, self-produced.

Classic oldschool hip hop, usually the album I cite for metal fans that want to get into it because it's feral and visceral like metal is.
