Damnation is better in the sense that Deliverance was an 'ordinary' Opeth album, yet is was so simple... the simplicity suits Damnation better... they just got alot of things right with what they were trying to do with Damnation, as opposed to Deliverance which is pretty much a sub-par Opeth album.
I don't think you're giving DELIVERANCE enough credit in terms of it being simplistic. I mean, "By the Pain I See in Others" is one of the most experimental tracks that Opeth have ever done... And it's my opinion that a "sub-par Opeth album" is an oxymoron... :)

Deliverance is good to average (by Opeth standards), Damnation is boring (by any standards). obviously I'll give it more time, but it doesn't do anything for me. (and YES, I do like a lot of mellow music, so that's not it.)

agree with you. it's the same things I wanted to post. Opeth could not top their latest efforts any more, there's no "aha"-moment, there are things somehow missing to make you love the albums.
Heather Nova, e.g., writes amazing mellow music - check out and compare...

In my opinion, Deliverance is good, although possibly my least favourite Opeth album. The tracks I've heard from Damnation really impressed me. I have nothing to moan about.

Fucking hell, Deliverance is my second favourite Opeth after Still Life. I find it to be more consistent than BWP, and I just sort of prefer it to MAYH overall. Strange that.

I haven't listened to Damnation enough yet to give it a placing in the Opeth hall of fame, but it's definitely gonna be up pretty high

Agreed 100 percent, Dolphz.

I think Deliverance and BWP are the best Opeth albums, Damnation is also pretty good but in another way. Like comparing apples and pears. I wonder if people would vote Damnation best if it was clear it was the new style for future Opeth.
