Deliverance Underrated?

Well I think it often gets overshadowed, being sandwiched between BWP and the incredibly accessible and different Damnation. I don't believe it's any fault of the album's music itself, because it's some great stuff on there. It's like a cleaner, more brutal MAYH, but with slightly more forgettable lyrics and guitar parts. That puts them about even in my book.

It may also be one of the harder Opeth recordings to "get into", especially if you're new to the band, which is maybe why its a bit underrated. I for one enjoy the album more and more every time I play it, up to the point where I'm listening to it quite alot lately.

All and all, would I say its underrated? Yes, to an extent.
Does it deserve to be? Hell no!

I dont think it's underrated...most people seem to agree that it's a good album, but inferior when compared to the other ones. I think it's a great album myself, but it still gets less rotations than my other cd's.

If anything, I would say its Opeth's least diverse recording, but I think that might be because of the whole split with Damnation thing...When I say diverse, I mean stylistically, because it still has alot of timing changes and whatnot, but its production is so clean that it almost (but not quite) threatens to become a bit repetitive due to the lack of cleaner stuff thrown in.

I think Deliverance is underated and gets much less attention than their other releases. The song Wreath is definitely underated, I think its one of Mikes best vocal performances.... well, in the growling department ofcourse.

I think Deliverance is an awesome album.... I always enjoy the stuff on it, and I dunno why alot of people say they don't like it as much as the old stuff, because Orchid seems really drawn out to me, and alot of the songs tend to wander... but I do think Delivernace is underrated

I agree with everything you just said, including the Orchid part. Now, don't get me wrong, I really like Orchid, but its the one Opeth album I only rarely listen to. It's nice how the band was able to take alot of the good aspects of that album, and trim away some of the more chaotic stuff. The whole album sounds like Opeth had alot of material at the time, but didn't really want to leave much off. I could be completely wrong, but I just feel like that may be the case sometimes as I listen to it.

Thank Jesus (Mike?) that they chose to put a song like Silhouette on there, though....it's amazing!

That's true...Morningrise does have a "sound" that's similar to Orchid, yet, even with longer songs, somehow the album seems more concise.

And its not even that Orchid has any filler tracks (Opeth has never made a filler track IMO), its just that some parts of a few songs start to get a little repetitive. But at least these sort of things were clearly taken care of as Opeth evolved musically, and for that, they deserve much praise.

Underrated? Hmm.

It's a good release. There are some interesting parts on that album. But this is Opeth, and what is it being compared to? Blackwater Park, Still Life, MAYH.... In my opinion, to all of those releases it is subpar, and in that sense I don't think it's 'underrated', but more 'overshadowed' by better, more aritstically rich albums.

Give me melodies. Give me colourful, beautiful melodies. Give me emotion laden, moving melodies. This is what I love about Opeth.

Thats the one thing i dont get when people talk about Deliverance - I see all those things in this album, perhaps only truly matched by MAYH. I love the other albums, but i often find that they have more of a quick-fix appeal. Deliverance is just so...subtle. It is a cd that i will find myself thinking about when i least expect it. Once it gets under your skin, it doesn't leave.

Underrated? Definitely. Deservedly so? Thats a matter of taste...but i would say no, not at all.

deliverance has a very dark mood to it.. i really like it.. some powerful moments.. and i like how they experimented with that track by tha pain i see in others i think it came out pretty cool

yeah, obviously from my username, i enjoy the album. it was my first full opeth album i listened to, so it stuck with me. i agree with everything you said sloth..it is a powerful, subtle album, gets under your skin and such.
i dunno if i can say it's underrated. i mean, if others don't care for it as much as another release, well then..so be it. not my favorite album, but i think it's very good.

I know this is basically repeating the above messages, it's an amazing album (title track being the highlight), but if I had to name Opeth's worst album I'm afraid this would be it. :erk:

when i compare it to still life (which is my fave album ever along with dark side of the moon) of course it sounds a bit shallow, not thoroughly done and a bit rushed.

but amazing album all the same. love it.

but it really bugs me that i cant relate to all the lyrics really.

Well said, I think you really hit the nail on the head there. Deliverance is an excellent album, worthy of great praise, but to be honest it just doesn't have the same impact as other more stylistically diverse Opeth releases. I think it's better to think of Deliverance/Damnation as a double album, and in that sense Deliverance really shines in exhibiting some of the heaviest shit the guys have ever put on tape...perhaps not as emotionally heavy but just in terms of sheer head-bangingness. The thing about Deliverance is that it's standing next to some of the greatest metal albums ever recorded...Still Life, MAYH, Orchid...frankly there aren't many that can compare. Deliverance is a 10 out of 10, but it's going up against, well, 11's.
