Devin Townsend - Ki

I think Ki is awesome. I'm buying it and forcing it open friends as soon as it comes out. Devin Townsend always does something different, and he always is able to pull it off. Second listen right now, favorite songs so far are Gato, Terminal, Quiet Riot.

he wasnt kidding when he said this album has no gain. even the heavy parts are relatively clean compared to syl and his other solo works.

So far i'm very dissapointed.. It sounds flat and amatuer. Gone is all the massive production, layering, awesome riffs, complex music..

It's kinda like ass sordid demos 2 or something.. too much random noodling for no point...

Im hoping i'll enjoy it more, but it just sounds... a bit wanky... but empty.. a bit too spacious. And not having gain has madfe dev lose his signature sound, and now sounds like some random noodling prog metal band or something...

=(

There's a few good moments, but... urgh...

Gonna keep listening though until I like it. Not gonna dismiss it outright, because I've been listening to devin religiously for 12 years now.

^Come on, do the drums in any way SOUND programmed? No. It's a drummer called Duris Maxwell. Apparently a jazz drummer of sort.

And I like the album. Not yet sure just how much, but I am impressed.

Apparently alot of the songs are just them together in the studio jamming. Hold out for the next album, he said it would be heavily orchestral. And the third album, he said it would be the heaviest thing he's ever created. :)

good album, not great. Trainfire was an achievement in "S" class.

A few of the songs are subtley creeping up on me.

Hope the next couple of albums are good too. I still don't beleive him that he's gonna release that many albums in one year... but we shall see :)

Ki is a very good album. Shows the incredible musical talent that Devin Townsend has, he can compose any type of music he sets his mind to. Certainly, a departure from previous records, but for me, a very satisfying listen.

It has a nice atmosphere alright, and I think it'll take a few listens to properly sink in. A couple of the songs do sound kinda samey though, and tend to just repeat several sections over in quite a noticeable way.

Btw, I much prefer this to Ziltoid, which I just couldn't stand. Dev is much better when he cans the ridiculous 'zany' humour and gets down to business. Ziltoid's lyrics read like they were composed by a bored 14 year old geek at the back of science class.

the musical core of Ziltoid is great, but the "dialogs" get old and kind of distracting after a while IMO.
I'm still digging the dialogue in ZTO. Maybe it appeals to the 14 year old dork I once was. I like that no matter what, you just can't take it seriously. Anyway, a metal album about a guitar wielding alien + coffee = :kickass: What more could you ask for in an album?

I'm waiting to buy Ki. I hate downloading albums and having nothing new but artwork when I get my mits on the CD.

Having a listen now, and its exactly how he said it was going to be.
Although i dont mind this record, some tracks do make me think, Wtf.
But like devy said, (or just about said) this album is the start of things to come and a contrast album.

Do you think hes going to put all 4 albums out in the rest of this year,
or
a year from the release of KI?

If ya get what i mean.
