Do you believe in God (or a 'higher power'?)

No and in theory I have a big problem with idiots that do. But as most of my friends believe in some meaning of life -be it god or whatever- it's hard to hate them. I'm just smarter.

Well said.
Your intelligence compliments mine.

This is just what you believe. Science is only limited to what human beings can perceive and/or think about. And a lot of science is just a model of reality, i.e. a simplified version of reality which we can test, understand and discuss. The "explanations" science has to offer are given within the human frame of reference. I believe there will always be phenomena which we cannot understand from the scientific paradigm. Today we have trouble explaining some well-documented ufo sightings, psi, the beginning of the universe, etc. Tomorrow there will be other things. Hence, I believe there will always be room for explanations/world views outside of the scientific paradigm.

Agreed.

And might I add:

Hence, I believe there will always be room for explanations/world views outside of the Alwin paradigm.

OH and, Merry Christmas, Alwin.

it would be nice if there was a god :D , some sort of hope and all that. but it seems too unlikely  . I mean have you ever seen anything that proves gods exsistance? It seems like something that was created in order to give people who are afraid to die some sort of hope.

read through the thread and, what can I say...you're all wrong.

first of: everyone claiming to be a die hard atheist who only believes in that which is proven by sience is just as religious as george bush. you're clinging on to theories. it is so now and it will forever be so because that is the nature of science. the way I see it, that's no better than insisting that there's some devine snot up there playing with plagues and tornadoes. a lot of scientists believe in god because the universe ending up like this (orderly) is so fucking unlikely that it's counted as impossible, unless someone cheated with the cards the whole time.

about us "knowing better in 2004", we still don't know shit (probably never will, but that's beside the point). we've all been sitting so high on our horses since we figured out that gravity theory that our noses is a far bigger threat to the ozon layer than all the cows in the world put togeather. but we only got the effect part down; the cause is still up for grabs. and it's like that with everything. sure, energy is nice. makes things go around and stuff. but we have absolutely no idea what it is. for all we know, it could all be the stuff of little gremlins and/or leperchauns. we've got a long way to go before we can call ourself smart (well, I'm incredibly smart, but, again, that's besides the point).

@andreaa: calling yourself an atheist, and still believing in souls...erm.. can you do that?

@bambi: god is great, satan is super. always remember that. and also remember: there is no porn in heaven.

PS! please note the sarcasm I've put in at various points in above written text.

PPS! I've never uttered a single serious word in my entire life. keep that in mind at all times.

Now it all suddenly makes perfect sense.....

He's slipped out to the kitchen

"I know I am the smartest man in the world, because I know that I know nothing" ...or something like that. socrates (wasn't it?) hit the head of the nail there.
