If all you drink is the readily available commercial stuff, then yeah, you're going to get bad beer (unless you actually like your beer to taste like water). Many North Americans like quantity over quality, and as such Budweiser and Molson are the most popular brands, but it doesn't necessarily make them good. However, try an American brewery like Lagunitas, or a Canadian brewery like Unibroue, and you'll see that there are a lot of good beers out there, regardless of the country of origin.
