Do you like death, black, doom metal?

There are sooooooooo many bands such as these that are killer instrumentalists, but I personally cannot sit through the carnage and bile spewing forth from the mouths of the obviously ill frontmen.

I like symphonic black metal bands like Dimmu Borgir, I also like black metal bands with "viking" influence like Vintersorg, Borknagar, Moonsorrow or Finntroll. I also like Children of Bodom, but I dont really think that's black metal. It rather sounds like Nightwish with a strangley transformed Tarja on the mic... :D

You see, I like all the "Black Metal" stuff that isnt really considered black metal by all "true" bm-fans...

I'm not really into death or doom, but what I've heard so far didnt really convince me to give it a try. There's just not enough melody for my taste.

know whats kind of cool, one of my good friends is the drummer for a Black Metal band called Tristesse. And they opened up for Opeth at Harpos in Detroit!!! I couldn't believe it when he said that to me.
I think their music is really good. My friend does both the vocals and drums. Check em out at www.Tristessemetal.com

Speaking of black metal: I'm completely fascinated by the latest Arcturus album. Arcturus used to be a bm supergroup, but now they definitely arent doing bm any more. I cant really put that sound into a specific genre. The closest might be "avantgarde metal". Very progressive, very innovative. I really like that CD.

If it's progessive then I'll listen to it except for some of the more extreme bands like Nile because their style sounds like noise to me. This is often the case with BM bands so I usually listen to the bands that have strayed away from that formula like Arcturus and Vintersorg. I probably listen to DM more then any other style of music at this time and the vocals did take some time to get used too. One good thing for alot of the DM that I listen to is that the instrumentation is so good that the vocals are usually ignored just like I do when I listen to Dream Theater.

Im starting to like some death metal. Has anyone heard of the new band As I Lay Dying? I found them on mp3.com and they are on metalblade. I love everything about their music. Crashing heavy guitars, awesome drums. The singing is a cross of hardcore and death. Technical and fun at the same time.

Sounds good, i'll check em' out. Check out Cryptopsy (Whisper Supremacy or And Then You'll Beg) it's very similar to the description you gave of As I Lay Dying.

O so I am ill now? :hypno:

:loco:

Cephalic Carnage is great too. Every eclectic and unique death metal. If anyone could honestly sit there and tell me that a band like Cephalic Carnage sounds exactly like Cannibal Corpse, is probably tone deaf.

I think many of us has similar tastes on this board, COB fucking rule as do In Flames (except Reroute to Remain), Dimmu Borgier, Opeth and the doom metal my dying bride.

These bands have tremendous atmosphere and are very mature musicality but many people can't get past the vocals, it took me some time but now I see there significance.

i agree alexander. It took a few listens, but when you finally get it it's just increadible. Dimmu for instance, especially puritanical euphoric misanthropia is a great cd that is among the ranks of V, the odyssey, and pretty much any prog band out there.

Just answer the question.

I, honestly, don't like these 3 genres. It's just full of screams and growls which I think are not necessary if someone is trying to convey a message. I'm not saying this because I really want a fight but rather because I only want to express my opinion.

So what do you think?

love them all. death metal has that blunt brutality i enjoy so much. black metal gives me the remedy for the side of me that hates. doom metal is something of a mystery to me, but i know i enjoy old amorphis and opeth like nuts b/c its something of a relaxer for me when it comes to doom metal.

I have always thought especially black metal to be like some kind of morbid fascination with death that frankly i grew out of when i reached puberty. imo of course. and if i cant understand wtf the person is singing about or if it just gives me a headache to listen to then i just cant get into it.
And death metal to me sounds mostly like the person is regurgitating their dinner, im afraid of them throwing up, but with that said, i do respect Angela's voice in Arch Enemy..that chick can growl like none other. So the more power to her.
but its not really ma thing, some power metal is cool, but im a prog. girl.

I listen to a pretty good amount of each genre. I love them all... Hmm, some times I wonder why people are so divided on the subject of extreme metal. But anyways, cheers for different tastes!

By the way...

Now Playing: Converge - Jane Doe

Um... I'm not too into them, except CoB, who I'm OBSESSED with.

So much harmony, so much melody. I loved their instruments so much I forced myself to get used to Alexi's screams, and now I love them.

I listen to Emperor , Obtained Enslavement , Dissection , Samael , Death , Morbid Angel , Vintersorg , Arcturus , Opeth , Ephel Duath , Ram-Zet , Septic Flesh ...
I advise you to check Emperor which is one of my 10 favorite bands maybe because it does have ones of the best keyboards use of all time
