Do you like death, black, doom metal?

I like Death Metal alot but not Black/Doom !

Here is some great bands of Melodic Death Style:
Arch Enemy (SWE)
Opeth (SWE)
The Haunted (death/thrash) (SWE)
The Crown (SWE)
well... Children Of Bodom (FIN) DAMN I love those solos!!!
Most Pricipium Est (this is some new one from Finland)
and of course At The Gates (SWE) but only Slaughter Of Soul album

"Absence Of War Does Not Mean Peace"

Same here Marre, just death metal. I think black metal is stupid.. and doom metal doesn't do it for me, but death metal is great. The early bands like Death, the Swedish ones like Arch Enemy, and gorier ones like Necrophagist (surprised you mentioned them Kate, haven't heard many people talk about them).

Black Metal isn't stupid. It's actually a pretty deep genre. It is an outlet for the dark side of human nature. Can power metal (of which all Symphony X fans are fans) claim to be anything so deep?

Don't be so quick to make such sweeping generalizations about genres. Ive heard some pretty stupid black metal but power metal can be "deep" as well (Blind Guardian for example).

I know that Blind Guardian are deep, and it's probably why they are my favourite power metal band. But in general power metal is pretty shallow music.

Some of the comments about DM/BM in this thread are just so far removed, and so uninformed, I feel compelled to reply in a topic I would normally never reply too.

power metal/progmetal - Hairmetal cockrock of the 90s and 00s...But when I was younger it was what got me into stuff that wasnt played on "mainstream" radio. So i wont rank on it too much. I still sorta like some bands from the genre, I used to be the biggest SyX/DT fan, but ehhh when I reached puberty (obvious reference to ealier comment) I grew out of it...To much galloping in E and A wankery and not enough great songwriting. Syx still has their moments every now and then, but frankly I havent listened to them since this forum opened. Opeth is what changed my life, i heard the heaviest shit Ive ever heard in my life at the time, and it was so fucking beautiful, and so "old school". From Opeth i started to discover REAL progressive music (YES, ELP, Anekdoten, Camel, Genesis, KING CRIMSON!) I was blown away by how great the SONGWRITING was in these bands, and how similar they were to Opeth is certain ways.

People. especially those in the prog community really have to stop writing off death metal as "fascination with death", "forests and evil" etc etc Cmon thats just ridiculously moronic...Sure yeah their are bands that do, but its no more as toungue and cheek cheezy as the insane amount of cock rock prog bands and their obsessions with Knights, wizards and Dragons. Hello!?! Cynic anyone?! thats fucking brutal and as technical as all hell, and beautiful at times! The lyrical content was spiritual and incredibly thought provoking, and their earlier stuff was political. Opeth?! lyrical content that ranges from intensely introspective to downright awe inspiring, w/o the huge serving of CHEEZE. Morbid Angel?! sure yeah it has wood pecker drumming, but the vocals ARE decipherable, and the riffs groove! often times in odd times, and twisted tonalities and keys. Trey and Erik are fabulous soloists, and to many here they prolly think "oh they just wank out of key" hmm Maybe its becuz your just so used to hearing harmonic minor and natural minor sweep picking over keys of A and E over and over again, that u fail to see the use of whole tone scales, and altered pentatonic modes. Cryptopsy? Not for the faint of heart, very brutal, but intense and amazing songwriting, as well as some of the most technical shit that exists out there...Their drummer Flo Mounier was a studenmt of Dave Weckl and rip jazz like no tomm. Maudlin of the Well?! highly expereimental jazz/Doom metal beautiful shakespearean esque lyrics, and they delve into amazing and exotic tonalities that almost feed the soul at times. Ephel Duath?! New jazz metal band, incredible...Dysrythmia?! Like mahavishnu? this is ur band...Neurosis?! POWERFUL doomcore music, will send u on a mind trip...I can go on and on.

In the end, i can surmise it all has to do with taste. Personally I LOVE BM/DM becuz I genuinely LOVE atonal and UNIQUE music. I love having to soak into music, whether it minimalistic moments asin Neurosis, or just full blown fucking chaos like Cryptopsy. I still cant see how I EVER was into power prog..People keep mentioning COB, as Yngvai mentioned, ye sthey are apower metal band. So their attraction to you guys is far from suprising...Guve ur ears and mind something different from the norm, a lil Opeth? a lil Maudlin of the Well? If you dont like it, well then at least you gave it a shot, and to each their own...I just hope I dont hear anymore of these "it evils, it scares me...its immature and childish..ect etc etc" cuz ur stereotyping an entire genre over 5 silly bands that came out of Norway in the early 90s. Anyways, thats all I gotta say...

-Peace

^WORD^

I used to hate death/black-metal with a passion. When I ignorantly spouted my hatred on communities(saying stuff like "it`s immature noise, appealing mostly to angsty teens)I was a part of, the fans of the genres rightfully accused me of being ignorant and lacking understanding. But, at the time I dismissed their comments as I had dismissed the music. Curiously, this was after I had grown out of my "prog" phase, so to say. I had listened to a lot of atonal music, mainly classical, which I can safely say is substantially more challenging to listen to than death metal. In retrospect I think it was the form of expression I reacted to. I couldn`t understand the beauty of the brutality and sheer aggression that good death metal bands have.

Then, one fateful day, my ears came upon Origin. If you don`t know who they are, they`re an american death metal-quintet who play extremely fast and confusing death metal. Compositions are seemingly directionless and random, drumming consists mainly of blast beats and fills at a ridiculous speed. Given my weakness for experimental and challenging music, I was intrigued. After listening to the song 'Portal', I downloaded all the available tracks at their mp3.com site. It was more of the same, and I noticed that my death metal barrier had broken down. Over the course of two months, I went through some of the extreme metal-catalogue; Cryptopsy, Emperor, Burzum, Darkthrone, Mayhem, Anaal Nathrakh, et.c. I must concur that much of the early stuff is VERY hard to listen to given the horrible production quality, a mark of 'trueness' to certain posers, but the later death/black is nothing but excellent music. I urge everyone here who does not fancy him/herself a prog snob to give the music a chance. If it doesn`t work, give it another. You`ll be glad you did.

I think now the black/death genre is much stronger than most power metal. Power metal at it's best is brilliant but most power metal out there is so old, overdone and so lyrically inept it's shocking.

COB is NOT straight power metal by any stretch, lets clear that one up.

Black/death metal is such an expressive and emotional genre of music,
for me personally it lets me delve into darkness to which I hide in my exterior character, yeah it's deep but it's a testament to the power of music.

Without darkness there is no light.

There is no denying the cheesiness of many progressive and power metal bands, but I still don't see the reason for fans to be divided between 2 types of metal: the kind with regular vocals and the kind with extreme vocals. There is amazing metal in both styles, and when a prog-metal fan bashes death metal or vice versa, it really makes me ashamed to be a metal fan. I can easily say that 95% of power metal is completely worthless and that a good deal of prog-metal bands are blatant Dream Theater clones, but at the same time about 95% of black metal is worthless and a good deal of death metal is blatant Morbid Angel worship. The only difference is I don't make the idiotic assumption that "everything" in a genre sounds the same, which is what too many prog fans do.

I have been hearing alot of Hype about Opeth and how they are so diverse and progy ect... In the JP forum (they're nuts over them) So what album do you suggest to get first? Kate Bush Rulz said Blackwater Park> What about you guys?

anything!!! Deliverance is killer, though heavier. Still life and My Arms, Your Hearse is amazing, and BWP is great. I would suggest BWP because that's probly their most acclaimed. Skip morningrise and orchid till after you get more into them

I think blackwater park was a stepdown for them. I would go with My Arms Your Hearse first. Although blackwater park is probably the easiest to get into.

yeah. Personally i reach for MAYH or Morningrise most often... deliverance a fair bit as well, but i think BWP would be the easiest to get into... that's why i recommend that one first.
