Does anyone sing anymore?

For me it's all about what the song is saying. If the passage in the song is about something really aggressive or violent screaming might be the right sing to do. I'm myself a singer and consider my level pretty good, I've just recently figured out a correct way to scream, before that i could sing just the more power metal like vocals and i always found myself kinda stuck when trying to sound aggressive. Now i can sing from soft ballads to pretty hard screaming vocals (i admit though I don't like more Growl like vocals, when i talk about aggressive vocals i prefer to limit myself to vocals like russel allen in symphony x's latest releases) I think it's all about versatility.

I think you guys are jealous because my generations singers kick the crap out of your fag boy cookie cutter so called vocalists. Name one of your muppet's that can compete with the likes of Dio, Dickenson, Tate. Problem is you cant.

George "Corpsegrinder" Fisher, Chris Barnes, David Vincent, Tom Araya and so on!!!

I wouldn't out Araya in that list. He just sounds like he's yelling with absolutely no concept of vocal technique at all.
It suits the music mind you, but he's hardly a 'good' vocalist by any stretch of the imagination.
Definitely not in the same class as death metal vocalists that have amazing technical command over their voice.

you can get up on stage a lot quicker by being a growler or screamer and it suits the music thats being produced today - but there are definitely quality in the vocals of the screamers/growlers of today these guys are great George "Corpsegrinder" Fisher, Chris Barnes - compare them with Arch enemy vocalist.....

if you want good singers that are making music today check these bands out -

Wow.. I really can't believe I'm chiming in here :S
This thread is fucking stupid. Sure, there are endless bands out there you scream etc. But even IN the screaming/ death growl categoriy, there are certain aspects that make it just as challenging and interesting as singing. I can comfortably do both, but in my band i only do death vocals.
To growl correctly to difference degrees, highs, lows, onto pitch etc, is quite difficult, doing that whilst being audible and with good pronunciation is even harder. I have the utmost respect for guys like CHristian Alvestrem, Mikael Ackerfeldt and the like. They can do both, but they take great pride in perfecting their death growls too. I too make sure I put a shit load of effort into perfecting my growls, correct breathing techniques for the right exertion and stamina, having good pronunciation etc.

Anyways... if your thread is a legitimate complaint, you're an idiot... :)

I don't mind some little parts of screamings, but just 10% of the song is more than enough.
I think screaming is pretty more easy cause there is no melody, no backing vocals, little personality. Once you know how to scream, you don't need too much technique.

No screamers will ever be as good vocalists as Jorn Lande, Russell Allen, Hansi Kursch or the good old Mercury, Dio.... I could name some hundreds.

And don't forget THE singer... he has more balls, more power and more metal in his throat.

I've got to be honest I'm getting a bit tired of the whole screaming thing as well.
Don't get me wrong I love decent screams but I like a bit of melody thrown in there too you know?
There's too many newer bands that just resort to screaming just because it's much easier to sound "teh brootalz" than it is to learn to sing powerfully and in tune. Mind you the same bands are also playing nothing but breakdowns all the time because it's easier than actually writing a song.

Yay, more troll created threads filled with support from other trolls. Good times. :Smug:

You must obviously only listen to music that is mainstream... and apparently bands like Hammerfall, Iced Earth, Helloween, Avantasia, Rhapsody, Blind Guardian, Dragonforce, Firewind, Dream Evil, Kamelot, Sonata Arctica, Gamma Ray, and many others can't sing and don't really exist, right? C'mon.

Metal riffs in general have progressively got more complex and seem to have taken the spotlight away from vocals. The screaming acts more as a rhythm section (like a rap I guess) and lets the guitars take the spotlight doing the melodic work in the songs. The difficulty comes when trying to put a counter-melody in the form of "real singing" over the top of an already over-the-top riff.

There's a shit load of pressure on any singer who attempts it and the bands that do very rarely get good recognition for it. For example, I hear a lot of people slating Nevermore because of Warrel's vocals, Protest The Hero (I actually fucking love this band) and also more recently, Periphery.

People who are making it work are bands like Scar Symmetry and I think someone mentioned earlier Mercenary.

I see your troll, and raise you 1x Rebecca Black.

Great post dude. And even to that degree though. Scar Symmetry write in a style that breathes for cleans Eg. The complex verse stuff with the growls, then the very almost large rock/ anthemic chorus stuff they do too.

I think the OP, whilst, for some bands the screaming can be a cop out, a lot of bands write in a style that doesn't make room for vocal melodies etc, the guitars being the instrument taking care of those duties etc.. or keys and what not. Could you imagine any old bodom stuff with cleans? It just doesn't suit that's all :)
