Doom Metal

What kind are you looking for? There's traditional doom (a la Sabbath, Witchfinder General, Pentagram, Candlemass, Saint Vitus, etc.) and there's death/doom, black/doom, funeral doom, drone doom, etc.

I don't think it's been mentioned before, but has anyone heard anything about the quality of the 3 LP release of the diSEMBOWELMENT S/T? Relapse has it in stock and I haven't really ever seen anyone say anything about it, and I was hoping to get some feedback before buying it.

Not that big of a traditional doom metal guy. I find Death doom to be very good though. I don't know much death doom bands. Well I may, just probly not off the top of my head.

death/doom?

Go listen to Moondark ~ The Shadowpath as soon as possible. Asphyx, Winter, Hooded Menace, Gorement, and Eternal Darkness are all good too... I'm not much for the more sad side of doom though... crushing, unrelenting deathdoom with no clean vocals make me happy. :)

Eh Asphyx has good riffs, I dislike the vocal style. Reminds me too much of Pestilence and Obituary, never heard of the others though ill check them out.

Check out early Amorphis, album: Tales From the Thousand Lakes

I just discovered Catacombs and have been listening to the album In the Depths of R'lyeh; fucking dark shit.

I find that Catacombs album super stale. I know exactly what to expect from every song and none of it is exciting or surprising. Funeral doom should be able to really hit hard and be exciting despite being very slothlike and drawn-out. Thergothon, in that sense, is pretty much the be-all-end-all of funeral doom, though there are others that are worth listening to (EA - Ea Taesse comes to mind, as does Wormphlegm's demo).

I know what you mean. Cook-ta made a funeral doom mix for me, and there's nothing in the Catacombs album that I haven't heard in that mix; but I still love the mood of the music, despite the fact that it doesn't offer anything really new. And the fact that all the songs are about Cthulu just seals the deal for me; it gives my mind a specific setting.

I like the idea of it, I think, more than its execution. It's a nice thing to shoot for; dark, occult, Lovecraftian atmosphere dripping with evil but...to me it just comes off as blah.
