Doom Metal

Anyone heard the new Sunn O)))? Don't think we have a drone thread, so I figured I ask here.

I'm curious. I've been getting into some slow, droning music lately and I want to know what direction to explore in. I've quite a fan of the following;

Bohren & Der Club of Gore - Black Earth (ultra slow doom/jazz which you would all do well to check out)
Earth - The Bees Made Honey in the Lions Skull
Electric Wizard - Dopethrone (I know this is far more strictly doom)
Grails - The Black Tar Prophecies

Not to mention a handful of other bands like Pod People and Space Bong (who are awesome).

There seems to be a whole heap of 'traditional metal' doom and 'folk' doom and 'funeral' doom. Although I haven't got too much experience to draw from, I don't think I like the blackened doom of say Khanate.

Any ideas / recommendations / advice? Sorry for being so fucking vague.

The new Isole album sounds a lot more like My Dying Bride than it does Opeth.

Andy, you have this bad habit of comparing bands to other bands when the comparison isn't very applicable. This is probably due to your immense level of poserdom and tryhardness.

Whatever you say, Jenn...the only MDB I've heard is Turn Loose The Swans, and it doesn't sound anything like that. The deep, choral vocals with double bass sections sounded a little too "prog doom-deathy" to me, which I kind of just relate to Opeth, along with the transitions between extreme and soft, which is an obvious Opeth trademark, as far as I recall. It's also been years since I've heard Opeth I think, so yeah, it's probably off the mark. Who cares? I think you should get over it, anyway. It doesn't suit you to care so much about what other people think.

It suits you even less to take things that I say about you so seriously, and yet you continue to do it every single time. ;)

Well, I knew you weren't serious about the poserdom part :p I've long since stopped caring. But you clearly were serious about me making an unapt connection.

Anyway, this pretty much sucks. The production is awful, missing a lot of power it could have, sounds really lifeless and compressed. The songwriting is actually kind of cool, but not "doom"y. There are too many weird, abrupt changes in tempo and "gothic" flourishes bother me a lot. To me, this seems like "false doom". I think this is probably a really bold claim, obviously; but it seriously sounds like Swallow The Sun-esque melodramatic boring crap and not actually powerful, sorrowful, emotional, gripping doom (a good contrast is definitely the newest Fall of the Idols, which is amazing at evoking this feeling in me). Sure, the production is shiny, the cover art is nice (actually what got me to blind buy it, plus all the hype they got), the performances are all spot on and tight...but I feel like it seriously misses feeling and proper execution in order to be "doom." That's my take anyway. :p

edit: I've heard from various people (mainly the Swedes) that their old stuff is rawer and generally better, so maybe I'll check it out some time. As it is, though, there's almost no drive for me to care.

I love it, don't know about the Swallow the Sun comparison, but I actually like the Morning Never Came haha.

Cheesy, gothy, weepy, eyeliner-core for the "doom" crowd. A plague. I must admit, Silent Ruins isn't quite THAT bad, though...

What? You must be another one of those deaf metalheads. First Opeth sucks and now Swallow the Sun is "eyeliner core"?(for the love of god not another counterfeit genre label)You speak of plauge, this intolerent 'I hate every band' mentality is a plauge and this attitude is whats ruining metal and discussions like this one. Nothing is ever 'cvlt' or fuckin' 'underground' or what the fuck ever enough for you. You sound like a pampered child who has been givin every choice of music and refused everything. I see nothing "goth" in Isole or StS for that matter. I'm gonna go out on a limb and say you probably think Katatonia, Daylight Dies,Draconian,Novembers Doom and Novembre are all gay bands too right? What do you fuckin' listen to and actualy like because all I ever hear are complaints and :cry::cry::cry:,it's not......it dosen't have....it's too....this band sucks because.....and I never hear any logical, discerning reason for hating on so many artists.

StS is doom/death for beginners and reeks of every cliche the genre has to offer while offering zero in the originality department.

If thats your assessment then fine but it sounds very atypical and I have to wonder how many StS songs you've heard to draw that conclusion.

A lot, and I've seen them live.

Here's why they suck: they're weepy, "gothy", cheesy, caught up in their own mopey image, lame and they do absolutely nothing any better than a million bands have before them.

Yeah, and I challange you to name one of those 'million' other bands. They're caught up in their own image? Nigga please, thats complete bullshit for one and even if they were there are tons of bands that rely on an image as part of their appeal and it works wonders.

Mercyful Fate
King Diamond
Kiss
Iron Maiden(Eddie)& just about every fuckin' black metal band that ever existed, imagery is everywhere in metal music and has been from day one like it or not. Do some homework buddy.
