Okay, I want to get more into doom metal. I've decided that My Dying Bride are one of my favourite bands of all time, especially "The Dreadful Hours" (I have Turn Loose the Swans, but it isn't up to the level of TDH for me) which is an almost flawless album, except for the Return to the Beautiful which just feels like it doesn't belong and the album would've been better if it was 7 tracks and finished on The Deepest of All Hearts.

I've heard a bit of Candlemass and I really like them too... I'm lovin' the staccato-style riffs that are melodic yet really hit you in the guts as well. My mrs loves Paradise Lost and has a couple of CDs so when I move to Adelaide I can get into them easily, but what other bands should I get into?

*this thread is what should've been the last one, but this board is being an idiot to me*

If you want something doomy yet very melodic and Aussie with some MDB influences see if you can get your hands on Cryptal Darkness - They Whispered You Had Risen.... they are now The Eternal, but I think they still sell Cryptal stuff through the new website, that is if they have anything left.

Cathedral
early Anathema (pre-96)
The Eternal, as Stonewall has suggested
Stone Wings (Aussie band, might be hard to find)
Skepticism (really obscure but worth it if you can get into it)
Shape of Despair
"The Dreadful Hours" is a masterpiece though. You won't find much better than that.

Yeah, out of all them I've actually only heard Skepticism.

Not really my thing... it's too disjointed or something. Doesn't feel right. hahaha.

I probably would have suggested The Eternal, but I haven't heard enough of them to feel comfortable doing so. I am interesting to see what they sound like with their new guitarist Lincoln Bowen, I found something quite appealing about his playing when he was in Mortification.

It will certainly be interesting to see what direction they go in now that Mark's the only Cryptal guy left. I never took much notice of Mortification after Envision Evangelene but from what I heard of Bowen on that album, he's pretty solid.

Okay, on my doom metal quest, I've tried out a few more bands.

Anathema is great, especially for the MDB style sound I like.

But for the gloomier doomier stuff I really like a band called Shape of Despair. They're amazing... really slow and gut hitting like Skepticism, but everything sounding as if it should be there and really trance-like.

I also heard another Skepticism song and it was a billion times better than the last one I heard, I really dug it. It was called "The March and the Stream" I think and it is supposedly the most depressing song of all time.

Which is a tad exaggerated, but a great song nonetheless.

totally aggree my fav doom metal band is dimmu borgir but cradle of filth is right up there nymphetmine was ok not the greates though
