Dream Theater- BLACK CLOUDS & SILVER LININGS Coming June 23rd

This new album is so frustrating. Bad production, boring solos, no catchy melodies. I know LaBrie is singing lower to perform better live, but he lost a lot of energy. And only 6 songs, 1 being a mix of previous songs about Portnoy's drinking problem. Honestly, prog bands like Circus Maximus and Beyond Twilight are creating much better music than Dream Theater. I think Octavarium is way better than BC&SL.

It's not a great album by any means; however, there are certain points where I get this vibe of "now this is the way DT should be!".

The most apparent example to me is in "A Nightmare to Remember" during some of the late choruses with the line that begins something like "quietly drifting.....drifting in blissful haaarmoneee", or something to that extent. Just the way all the instruments came together and for once didn't sound mechanical. It sounded so melancholy and was full of atmosphere that wasn't stale....it actually gives me shivers. Also near the end of the same track there is a nice touch of something different when the music transitions into a pretty heavy polyrythmic beat of drums and bass; however, portnoy comes in with vocals and totally ruins it...

Oh, and I find "The Shattered Fortress" the most boring piece of crap ever dumped on us by DT. I'm not even too familiar with the AA songs from the last two albums so I don't hear as much reused stuff as most people, yet I still find it just a horribly boring song overall. Even if none of those other AA songs were never written and this song was totally new material it would still be the most horrible DT song I have ever heard. Keep in mind that I bought Octavarium and listened through it once and never touched it again; and with Systematic Chaos I heard like maybe two songs on the internet and never looked back..

So much hate for Octavarium, I thought it was miles better then both Train Of Thought and Systematic Chaos, better than BC&SL and almost but not quiet as good as 6 Degrees. Black Clouds hasn't really grown on me at all, still sounds like the leftovers from their greater albums to my ears. As far as 'best of 2009' lists go I'm sure this album won't even make a dent on mine or many other peoples list.

2009 has been weak so far. In autumn we'll get a new Porcupine Tree and Orphaned Land, and maybe in winter a new Pain of Salvation.

But so far it has only been Gwynbleidd - Nostalgia that I rank very highly. That album is fucking sick.

If by technically proficient you mean loosing all sense of emotion and feeling, than id agree.Proficiency has never been what ive looked for, like a good video game, the graphics and advancements in technology mean nothing if they make shitty video games, even the most simplistic 2D game could be the most fun you've ever had. Same with music, I couldn't care less of Petrucci is getting better, cuz his song written skills certainly are not!

Maybe its just me, but they've lost all feeling. And the fact that they're a huge success makes me believe they're pretty full of themselves these days. That's the feeling I get these days, they don't care bout written music from the heart, but every 4th passage has to show off how 'technically proficient' they are!

I wasn't expecting much with BC&SL, and that's what I got. Just don't care for this one. I haven't really liked anything after 6DOIT, so it's time to part ways and stop buying their stuff hoping I'll like it. It's apparently not going to happen. :(

I went to Best Buy earlier to buy Mass Effect for the PC and I just happened to look back on the display behind me and see the 3 disk special edition of Black Clouds and Silver Linings for $15.00. So far, my impression is mixed, but I already like this better than the last two. The later tracks are good and seem pretty inspired (Strange lyrics, though...)

Words can't even describe how excited I am about the new Porcupine Tree album. Their last album was a masterpiece.:kickass:

Not to get off topic, but have you ever played that game before? What do you think of it? I thought it was cool at first, but there is A LOT of talking...

About the album, it's nothing spectacular, but I do think it's their strongest release since Train of Thought. My favorite track from the album isn't even on the main album... the cover of Rainbow's "Stargazer." LaBrie actually pulls off Dio kinda well.

Nightmare to Remember - Cool until the end when Portnoy starts "singing."
Rite of Passage - Ok, love the chorus. Solo section doesn't fit in the song, though.
Wither - Yawn. DT going for singles. It's like the little retarded brother of "Forsaken."
Shattered Fortress - Decent, but to many re-used riffs. Also too much Portnoy.
Best of Times - Happy and Rush-like. Good tune.
Count of Tuscany - Best on the album. Love all of it, but the guitar part in the middle gets boring.

Oh, hell. Got the three-disc set for $18.99, and now I need to make a stop by the detail shop to get the dash cleaned after blowing major jizz after listening to "Take Your Fingers From My Hair".

Now I'll have to listen to the rest of it. This one song alone was worth the 20 bucks. I'd swear it was Randy Jackson playing the solo. F#$@!

Yeah, I played a bit of it on XBox 360, but never got around to finishing it because it is my brothers system. So, I just bought it for the PC. I liked it a lot, which is why I'm buying it again. And yes, there is way too much talking! It's like a movie.

Man am I pissed you cant buy the whole album off itunes or any other mp3 download site that i have seen Is that a usual thing now until its relased for a while? i bet if i go to bestbuy they don't have the 3disk set ooops

Alright, I tried to listen to the new DT yesterday, but just gave up after 9 minutes of the first song. Now I decided I'll listen it through for the hell of it... Now 12 minutes in the first song and kinda hating it.

Dude, I'm listening to the first song right now and the combination of the weird singing and dumb ass lyrics is making me twitch around in my seat. I think it does get pretty good around the 5:00 mark, though.

Ok, I'm at the end of 5th track now... Still the "Count of Tuscany" (Fucking horrible song title, btw) to go. The album has had it's moments. This song was alright. It's just weird how it can go from pretty good to pretty bad to pretty good a fair amount of times within one song.
