Dream Theater - Octavarium

While there are Muse inspired moments on the album, "Never Enough" is a complete rip-off of Muse.
ARGH it IS! i was trying to pick what it sounded (way too much) like, and that's it! it is, it's a complete rip off. that's the only muse song i ever actually semi-liked, though. so it's not 100% bad.

I'm new in here so I haven't read all the messages, but I know many people don't like Octavarium, and I really don't understand why..
I find this album great, I've already listened to it a thousand times, It's true DT has changed the style of the music, but It's not a bad thing, I think every album shows a different aspect of DT, some prefer the darkness of ToT, some prefer the softness of Falling into Infinity... Octa is a new style, It doesn't mean the band is dying, It simply means that they try to experiment new styles.

It's true I didn't like Six Degrees and ToT so much, but I really like Octavarium, at some moments It made me shudder...

I don't have any problem with "dark music" or "heavy music." I wouldn't have a problem with it from Dream Theater either (besides the issue that it messes up James' vocals). The issue is that it's so generic sounding.

I was watching some of the Live At Budokan and listening to some of the ToT songs, and to kind of sum it up, when Dream Theater tries to be "metal," it sounds basically like a compilation of every silly cliche in the "metal book," and that's not being progressive at all.

their epic is great...but overall I was a bit disappointed with the album. It just bored me...I loved ToT and was really anxious to hear more metal like honor thy father and this dying soul. Oh well... circus maximus is out, and thats all that matters...

Yeah the Circus Maximus album is just great! Dream Theater is dying and it seems CM are ready to take their place....

Kinda sad that such a long running legendary band (DT) is dying right in front of us. Even though I have a few DT albums and don't like them as much as some it is really sad to see them deteriorating...

i just really hope that when the new SX comes out and people start bitching about it, you guys remember the stupid bullshit you all say about other bands.

Without turning this into a DT v. SX thing, because ill be the first to say how stupid it is to do so, i have a lot more respect for a band that goes in new directions and dissappoints some fans than i do for a band who has kept fans be re-doing the same stuff over and over, you could play their CD's back to back and never notice when a new one starts except for the change in the sound of the production. With the exception of the Oddyssey which they replaced most of their proggy-ness with straightforward metal, they have taken to the same approach to basically all their material. (keep in mind im not trying to bash SX, i love their stuff, but lets be honest here. ANd the only reason i used SX in the comparison i made was because this is an SX board and i knew everyone would be familiar, there are countless other bands i could refer to)

Also, another note on the "strings." They're actually quite cliche and a bit silly when you think about them. It really could have been much more. I agree with whoever said that they could have used just the keyboard. They could have made the orchestration much better and more complex to better evoke emotion. One of my big complaints with certain bands is that they use orchestra effects but use a synthesizer for them, and make it painfully obvious that it's fake. It's great, but it would sound much better if it was real. Well, here they didn't do enough with the orchestration to make it worth having the real instruments there.

Worth it alone for the outro of the title track, IMO. One of the musical highlights of the new millenium.

Well, after getting it, I got all the rest of their albums, and I think it's probably their best.

But the point is, it has probably the best orchestration in metal ever. And if you think the strings on Octavarium are one of the musical highlights of the 21st Century you need to listen to some classical or something posthaste. Orchestras are for more than just taking a melody and playing the same melody with a hundred instruments. They should know better.

Good album, but they've done better. I don't think they know where they're going and what the fans want anymore.
and that is a good attitude to have. who cares what the fans want. i'm not PoS. i don't want to be in PoS. i just want to hear PoS... and what THEY want to write.

What the hell? Have you heard of 'opinion.'

You can think that as much as you want, but the fact remains that in Octavarium there are x violins all playing the same melody, while in 'BE' much more effective orchestration is used. This means there's harmony, counterpoint, etc. Which are all traditional classical values. That's what makes it great. The violins are so simple in Octavarium.....they just are.

Again the use of the strings is another point with what I was mentioning about them doing things and sounding like a compilation of all the cliche things in whatever genre.....well, that's it. Just adding strings because youv'e got money and want to sound "epic," and then not using them like you're supposed to, or.....how you use them to make them sound the best they can be.

HEY FUCKHEADS! whos that damn asian chick??? thats all i really care about. not oh this is better than sum'm else cuz blahdiblahdiblahHOW IS THAT ASIAN CHICK RELEVANT AT ALL???
