Dream Theater - Octavarium

For people who keep saying how they miss the early stuff, I just don't see how this is THAT different from what they used to do that was soo amazing (apparently Another Day and Caught in a Web were masterpieces???).
.

Another Day was a masterpiece jackass. There is something different....they didn't half ass on writing songs

Free of your own expectations or preconceived notions of what *you* think the music should sound like.

Thanks for the laugh.....

I'm in the group of people who want a disc to sound interesting that I will enjoy for many years to come and this disc misses for the most part.

There's just too many other bands with various sounds that are making much more interesting music then what is on display with this disc.

If you want to convince yourself into thinking that this disc is worth the time to listen to then good for you but to claim that people don't like it because "they go into the disc wanting it to sound a certain way" is comical. Especially since most of the users out here don't want a disc to be a rehash of what they've heard before.

You totally missed my point.

What I said was basically directed at the guy who keeps saying this record isn't "progressive" enough, and that the Orchestra was underused.

Those are expectations, those are stupid. Having an idea of your head of how a band should use an orchestra or how "PROG" they should be totally gets in the way of the actual music you're being presented with.

Actually I'm talking much more in a general sense of how people listen to new music in general, not just people who don't like the new DT.
This isn't about not liking the album, I could care less if you do or don't. But saying 2343 times that it isn't good because it isn't "PROG" enough is just stupid. This isn't a genre game, it's just music. You like it or you don't.

It isn't comical, it's the truth. Should I go back and quote in bold how many times the word "PROGRESSIVE" was used?

Especially since most of the users out here don't want a disc to be a rehash of what they've heard before.

Well, that I find hard to believe. What exactly is truely progressive in this genre anymore? SymX? Pagan's Mind? Shadow Gallery? Hardly.
Now don't misunderstand, I'm not knocking these bands at all, but some people actually claim any of the above are more musically progressive than other prog metal bands, THAT is comical.

Sorry I didn't know that you were out here setting up the parameters of what music should be considered progressive and what souldn't...

I find those discussions to be "comical" so please carry on without me...

Don't get the new Dream Theater disc...It's their worst! Don't misunderstand this opinion because it wasn't derived because of some expectations that I had before I listened to it...

Can I say again I was addressing Barking Pumpkin?

Should I use bold? Would that help?

I was NOT addressing everyone in this thread who doesn't like Octovarium, I could care less. HE was the one who kept using the word progressive and judging the album based on PROG and what the orchestra did or did not do.
THAT is what I took issue with, not "what is / isn't prog .. you MUST like ovt8 OMGWTFLOLWTFOMGLOLBBQ"

I'm guess that I should say that I'm sorry again for reading your statement below and not recognizing that you were only speaking to Barking Pumpkin...I just can't figure out why I thought that you might have been "addressing everyone"...

"Some of you need to realize having expectations or "what you want it to sound like" is a bad thing when listening to new music."

In the future could you please use BOLD so that this confusion won't happen again?

Thanks for the laugh.....

This is me quoting your post, that means I'm more thank likely talking to you.

However "Some of you need to realize having expectations or "what you want it to sound like" is a bad thing when listening to new music." COULD apply to anyone.

Reading is hard.

This isn't even an argument about the music any more - it's an argument about the argument.

I stopped paying attention to it long ago - about the time people started being all irrational. It was around the beginning of the thread I think.

Why not just accept neither side will ever agree and you're wasting time trying to convince someone of something when they fervently believe the opposite of what you believe and always will?

Are you having trouble writing?
Is english your second language?

Well my dad could beat up your dad...

hmmm this whole getting the last word thing really doesn't feel as good as all of you guys seem to be making out. Perhaps it's that arguing on the internet makes you cool. Yeah it must be that.

Can I just say from the bottom of my heart, you have my utmost respect for spending uncounted hours posting 14 pages worth of definitive and decisive discussion which has concluded absolutely nothing. You have done the whole world a service.
