don't care for the new song. Sounds like it could be on "Falling into Infinity".....I has nothing that jumps out at you......Very bland..........

I am surprised more people are not talking about this. I got through about 4 listens while working today and I think it is amazing. The writing on a lot of it is great. I could see some of their more metal fans being a little turned off by some of the mid-temp stuff in the middle of the album. But really that is some of the best stuff on the album, they really catch on after a few listens. My favorites so far are The Looking Glass, Surrender to Reason and Illumination Theory. This really needs to be heard as an album. They seemed to write it with this in mind, from the opening score to the pseudo closing-credits instrumental at the end.
Music wise I think it's fantastic!! I think it's their best cd in a few years, BUT(and I'm going to catch hell for this), I just don't care for Labrie's vocals...In my own opinion, he's the weak link in DT, and I think a band with such high caliber musicians can do much better when it comes to a vocalist. Not saying this is a "fact" just a musical taste when it comes to vocals....It's hard to explain why his vocals bother me, and I'm probably the only one that feels that way, but, hey, can't help the way I feel....

I will need to listen to samples before I buy. They have been on the decline over the last few releases IMHO. I want this to be good, but would be surprised if that was the case.

I think he's an integral part of Dream Theater's character, but I've always liked his voice. He's way underutilized as a songwriter.

I might try it tomorrow, but based on the single it didn't exactly set me on fire. I love Rudess in his other projects but I think he's bad for DT. Moore was the soul of the band and they've just never been the same after his time.

Some of the heavier music of the new DT reminds me a bit of the older style of the prog metal bad Adagio. Lots of crunchy riffs and time changes in that style....

I think its their best album since Metropolis pt II and Six Degrees.
Though it didn't blow me away at first listen, however the second listen I caught a couple of interesting dynamics.
I'd have to say my favourite tracks are The Looking Glass, Behind the Veil and Illumination Theory.
This album sorta reminds me of a more interesting Octavarium.

Very good listen so far, but nothing they've done since Images and Words and especially Awake can match the excitement I had for those albums when DT released them over 20 years ago. Such a magical time for the genre. Queensryche had pooped-out by then and DT was my new fix. Those discs will always be tied to my college days and some very special memories -- good and bad. It's impossible not to go back in time and find myself daydreaming whenever I listen to them.
I'm so glad I witnessed this band blossom in "real-time" versus discovering them a decade after those albums were released like a lot of kids do now. There was just something special about going to the record store the day of the release -- after years of anticipation -- and buying the cassette and later, the CD. No leaks, no sneak peaks. When you heard the songs, it was the very first time you heard them. Maybe a local radio station would play an advance copy of the single, but that was the most you could hope for. There was no real internet back then like there is now, so the metal magazines are where you had to follow the bands or you could join the official fanclub for newsletters that were mailed to you. "MetalShop" every Friday night was the way to discover new metal, along with maybe a local college radio station that got airtime to play metal at 2 AM on Sunday mornings. How times have changed! What will the music industry be like another 20 years from now?

+1. The placement and feel of the single makes perfect sense when listening to the album in it's entirety. This will be the first DT album I've bought since SFAM.

I agree on both points. I would urge people to give this about 4-5 listens before passing judgement. Sure after those listens some still might not like it, but I think there is a lot of subtle song writing that many will grow to appreciate once they give it some time.
Actually, I thought the same thing in terms of the Octavarium comparison. Though you were more diplomatic about it, I kinda think it is like Octavarium if it were not shitty. Octavarium is the only DT release I dislike.

Agreed...James is the weak link... DC Cooper should be singing for DT ... and this is coming from a life long fan who has seen them 13 times

Posted on FB earlier; New Dream Theater album is yet another challenge to get through without falling asleep. It doesn't get better and at this point there is never any going back for this band. They have released the most boring monotonous so called "prog" for so long now it is almost hard to believe they ever released a good album.
