most furreigners living in a furreign country learn some of the host language so they can survive.

Unless they sneak across the US/Mexico border.

i'm pretty sure most of them know at least enough english to order food and buy stuff at a store. i'm not talking writing academic dissertations, i'm talking "getting by on the street"

well no, the FOBs don't know any, just like a lot of FOBs who are English teachers abroad don't know any. and if the ghettos are big enough and their rich employers speak Spanish they don't really need to learn English. there are FAR more Spanish speakers in the U.S. than English speakers in Japan but yeah now that I think of it there are people who stay here for 3 years and have ~100 word vocabularies in Japanese.
