Enslaved - Ruun

Hahaha, remember that time when people here IN THIS HERE METAL FORUM voted for some Ulver soundtrack album over Iron Maiden.

Which reminds me, haven't listened to any of the releases between Perdition City and Blood Inside although both still get frequent plays. And now, Eddie's revenge:

speaking of that, are we not doing RC March Madness? because you know the NCAA MM is about as interesting as watching paint dry whilst listening to said ulver soundtrack

I was thinking about it, but wasn't sure if there was interest.

I can set it up again if folks want to do it.

Songs 2 , 3 and 5 are average at best IMO. The title track and the opener could have been on Below the Lights. The rest I don't remember. Not even 7/10 in my book atm.

Agreed. I am sadly let down. This CD might grow on me, but in general I'm not a fan of where they're taking the music. All of this post-rock stuff... ugh, fuck off please.

Why is there so much antipathy towards post-rock everywhere these days? Is it the percieved pretentiousness, or do you guys actually just not like the music? Weird, either way.

No I just don't really like it. Not something I would really want Enslaved to be fucking around with, but then again I am NOT in Enslaved and have no authority to tell them what to do. Keep in mind I'm all into Isis and all of that stuff, but this just seems so uninspired and WTAGOSUGAOPSUGHO to me.

Well Isa sounded dry and uninspired as fuck to me so I wouldn't be as quick as yourself to ascribe much of that to the addition of post-rock elements in particular. And don't get me wrong, I'm not some huge post-rock fan jumping in to defend the genre or anything. I have 1 post rock record: Yanqui U.X.O. by GY!BE, and as its a vinyl i've never even spun it the whole way through!

the genre as a whole sounds interesting. to post-rock fans: does pretty much all of this music follow the structure of starting off simple and building to a climax? that would be kind of stupid, to be honest, so i hope not.

Oh trust me buddy- I'm not blaming everything on post-rock, Isa WAS dry and uninspired as fuck.

That's what I've noticed about most of it. Yar.

I'd still listen to it, 'cause there's a lot of good stuff to be done with that kind of thing, but why make it so limiting? Maybe it'll just take time for some bands to start spreading their wings a little. I would like to check out some Explosions in the Sky and that Evpatoria Report album (wow!), and Red Sparrowes (Neurosis members right? hell, i still need to check out Neurosis)

building "climaxes" is easy when all you do is fuck around with dynamics and go quiet quiet quiet soft soft soft quiet soft quiet soft a little louder now rokkin guitars LOUD LOUD LOUD OH MY FUCKING GOD WE'RE BASICALLY JUST BEATING ON OUR INSTRUMENTS NOW

try building climaxes with constant blastbeats instead, now that takes songwriting skill! huah!
