Evergrey- Monday Morning Apocalypse (review/spoilers inside)

I've listened to it a few times and I'm still digesting; I'm holding off on full commentary until I have the actual CD and can listen with lyrics. I love Still in the Water, though.

Yeah same here, my review on the MMA thread is pretty onpoint I'd say but I definetly wanna hear some words from the band about the album asap

Anybody think that banner of evergrey promoting the album doesn't really fit the "band image"?

I'm amazed at how many people think they know what Evergrey should be... and are so quick to criticize everything from album covers to promo photos on top of the music.

It depends on which "image" you have of the "band image" I think. To me it's fine.

I mean the hair thing, I would expect Simone Simmons to have her hair flowing and billowing like that, not Tom Englund

I have just listened to the album a few times and have a few things to say

For one, this album is not as dark as their other albums, this is obvious. But dark isnt always or usually what im looking for in an album, so dont take this as a negative mark for me. Although the band is kind of considered doomy and goth-like, so the happier atmosphere isnt really what defines a doom band, but who is to say that evergrey are a doom or dark band? It's Evergrey's band, not ours, so they make the choice of how they want it to sound.

For two, I did notice the shorter songs, but evergrey were never really advocates of the 5+ minute songs, they usually stay around 4 or so minutes and this cd has an average song time of 3:43 compared to SDT at 4:47. Not too bad, but long songs dont mean good songs.

I didnt really analyze the album too much while listening to it, as I was busy writing an essay, but from what I got from listening to it about 4 or 5 times, is that it is a grower. Not to say I dont enjoy it, it just grows on you, cool parts in some songs become cooler as time goes on. I seriously dont see why the fans are so dissapointed in this album.

Its definitely not a sellout album. I really dont know how to define a sellout album. Many of you think that St. Anger is a sellout album, it isnt. Who the hell would buy the album before they heard it? A sellout album is an album that needs to be made more accessible, and St. Anger as far as im concerned is a lot less accessible. Very hard to listen to, and not many people like it. I would maybe consider the newer (not Come Clarity) In Flames sellout albums, but who knows.

So far this album has me hooked. I really enjoy happier music, and this cd seems to fit my description of good music.

I respect your opinion if you like it or not, but it seems like it is popular to hate it. Come on, you guys like Evergrey and this album is very Evergrey. They changed their style a little bit, but it still has their traditional heavy riffs, effect vocals (they do this on every album, but usually as talking parts), and the slower songs. It definitely sounds like Evergrey and is so far a good cd. You guys can keep being inconsiderate fans, but I really like this cd.

Im definitely going to buy this, and if you guys have gave the album more then 3 spins and consider yourself an Evergrey fan of any kind, you would have to buy it. Its called being considerate. Its not nice to steal an album and not buy it, its very disrespectful. You can do it to bands that you dont like, but when you like Evergrey and listen to their stuff, you should do the right thing and buy what you stole.

And for the guy who said that Evergrey is the only band that meets people after concerts, what other bands do you know? Come on, most of the bands I listen to do this.

oh....after i looked the article...i want to listen the album right away...
but i have to wait until May....

hope the album let me feel good....

I gave it a better listen today, and let myself sleep on it. I find it really hard to get into it. No songs really standout, and it really is not musically complicated like their other stuff was. Not to say technical necessarily equals good, but in Evergrey's case, this album has showed that it does.

I really hope the album is a grower like I was saying before. But so far, im sorry to say that it is pretty bland. I dont feel any emotion coming from this one like I did so strongly with The Inner Circle, and the other ones.

Thus far, im going to rate the album at 75/100. It is a C album imo. Nothing special, pretty much an average cd. I am hoping that I learn to enjoy this album and see where the guys from Evergrey are coming from, but right now, the album just seems like it was not well thought out. But unfortunately, I dont think this will be the case. It just doesnt sound like it has the qualities that a grower album has. It is like a back to basics album, intro, verse, chorus style of writing.

EternalMetal - I guess you are referring to me when you mention "the guy who said that Evergrey is the only band that meets people after concerts". I'm glad you have a different experience to me, because it's cool to meet bands at their gigs. All I can say is that I have been into metal for about 13 years and I've been to more gigs than I can remember, ranging from AOR to death/black metal bands. I would say that I know, listen to and like about 400+ bands across the rock/metal spectrum and I'm discovering new bands all the time. But it's not a competition! I have only met a handful of bands and most of these by accident. In my experience, only Evergrey seem to go out of their way to mix with the fans - Bloodstock 04 for an example. Good for you if you have met other bands, but I haven't, hence my point!

Ive meet the guys from SYL, saw the guys from Fear Factory and Iced Earth chillin outside the venue, and I dont really try to recognize others. Although I know Opeth stuck around at the gig I went to, but I hear that you gotta purchase a cd in order to meet them and get their autograph. Mikael heard about this, and was outraged, he knew nothing about it and thought it was rediculous.

Dammit, this cd is like an emotional roller coaster. Im starting to really like every song on the cd. Its a grower like I thought, less complex than the other cds, but the cd is catchy in an Evergrey way. I like it now

True.. was totally disappointed after 2-3 listenings and had decided not to
purchase it, but after listening to it several times at work it grew more and
more, and here we are.. pretty good, not excellent though. Guess I'll have to buy it anyways. :)

Trevlig helg osv...

yep, you are a cheesy Black Album fan..that post says it all...St. anger is beyond cheesy too.....If you have listened to real metal before 2000 you would unerstand what real metal was and what today's pop/radio rock is...power chords with jocks headbanging is what "we" call selling out

lunatic:kickass:

To sum up what I've learned from some in this thread - It is not okay for people to get older and their tastes change. Gotcha... let me just scratch my Karnivool CD and put Reign In Blood on an endless loop. Gosh, I feel so lucky to have others looking out for my musical tastes and keeping these mean & nasty sellout bands in check.

I was going to post here saying that I like what I've heard of the new album, but I'm obviously incorrect about that and I'll not embarrass myself by saying something so foolish.

Okay, sarcasm aside and ignoring the negative minority (including some of those whose posts and sigs seem to deliver the ultimate oxymoron), I really do dig what I've heard so far. I'm not a huge fan of the mix, but things may change before release. If not, there are still some groovy songs at the core.

The songs are quite different from what they've done so far, as The Inner Circle was before that, however there is no huge, unexpected change in the band's evolution.

Opinion on the new album aside, I hope to see Evergrey touring Australia to promote it.

NeonKnite, you are saying that a band sings for itself not for other people.ok I agree on that!but how can u explain that the very same band with the same members(with a few exceptions)made albums like SDT,ISOT,RD,TIC which were were almost in the same line and now when they changed the producer they changed their style and from a dark/prog style it became an almost NU metal style.ok,the change began from the RD album but the same guitar was present and with TIC the keyboards were reintroduced.after my opinion the MMA is an avergae album that can be made by any ordinary band!they lost their uniqueness!!that something special that every fan that appreciated SDT and ISOT albums loved about them.of course if u keep playing the album u will find it enjoyable but evergrey had albums that charmed u with their first notes so that's why the expectations were far grater.I'm from romania so sorry for my bad english:)
