Personally I reckon Shout At The Devil was their most non-glam METAL look! All the black eye makeup, torn fishnets, studs, spikes, the pentagrams shooting from the kick drums in Looks That Kill etc... pure shock rock metal!
Theatre Of Pain era was when they were the glammiest! I consider Motley Crue glam metal, they were the pioneers of it really.... Too Fast For Love was THE originator of the whole Hollywood sleaze metal thing.
The thing that set the Crue apart from the other bands though, was that they were so much more real and most of the others were fakes. The other bands were playing out the part of a wild rock & roll lifestyle as part of their image etc... Motley Crue were nothing but wild rockers from head to toe! The others were imitators, they were the genuine thing! The most "rock & roll" band of all time!
And it really showed in their music. There was no posing or fakeness, its easy to spot a fake. So to me, that's why Crue always sounded more wild and exciting than everyone else. If you listen to a Pretty Boy Floyd record it sounds like 4 guys trying to sound as sleazy, glammy and over the top as they can and recapture the attitude and vibe that made bands like Crue great. If you listen to a Motley Crue record, you hear 4 guys playing music that's pretty much a reflection of their lifestyle, attitude and pretty much all they know in life!
