Favorite Opeth ballad?

oops, i think you misread the question. the OP was asking for the best opeth ballad, not the worst.

and that's what i did!

'Credence' is the best
'To Bid You Farewell' is the second one
'Harvest' and 'Benighted' occupy the third place

'Face Of Melinda' is one of the worst along with some tracks on Damnation...

Face Of Melinda's best bit is when the distortion kicks in.. The chormatic chordal riff is amazing!
No-one's said harvest :( i think the vocals lines are possibly the best out of all their ballads, although it's a pretty simple song - has a very odd feel to it in parts too.. excellent.
Credence is just so relaxing and it has such an odd yet enthralling intro melody.. amazing doesn't even begin to describe it.

one of the 3 .. probly harvest or F.O.M tho

In this order;

1] To Bid You Farewell (it's just pure brilliance, enough said right there. I'll NEVER forget the day I saw it live...greatest...show...ever!)
2] Credence (kinda almost a dark/romantic tune - the ending guitar is magnificent!)
3] Face of Melinda
4] Harvest
5] In My Time of Need
6] Hope Leaves
7] Patterns in the Ivy II
8] Still Day Beneath the Sun
9] Benighted

I think it's about time for my serious entry:

A fair Judgement
Harvest
Windowpane
To bid you farewell
Face of Melinda

Face of Melinda. To Bid You Farewell still sounds too 'mix-n-match' along with the rest of Morningrise. The tracks on Still Life, IMO, exhibited the greatest degree of artistic songwriting, and Face of Melinda is no exception. If you're a guitarist and have checked out any of the tabs, you'd know what I mean.

I agree 100%

Easily To Bid You Farewell, it's just............ the best. I can't belive some liked FOM better wow! Anyways, was just briwzin the old posts. Kudos to HYPNOS, that man speaks the truth!

I'm not a guitarist but still understand the fact that Face of Melinda has intricate guitar work. I heard it play along with the tabs on this cool site I checked out - wow! I appreciated it more.

Even still, when it comes down to music for music, To Bid You Farewell is quite a ways more beautiful in terms of songwriting. It's pure bliss for the ears. I let one of my friend's check it out and instantly he said it reminded him of Pink Floyd, which was a good thing. He loved the hell out of it and not even knowing who opeth was.

I'm not 100% on this, but I'm confident enough that most here will favour TBYF in this category. It'd have been nice if this was a poll.
