Where the fuck are traditional and stoner metal? I like those two far more than any other metal genre.

I'm the only prog metal fan so far? Appalling.

I decided that prog metal was my third favorite genre, so that's the one I picked. :headbang:

yeah I also noticed there is no 'grindcore' choice

I voted death metal

my favorites in order:

Grindcore
Death Metal
Doom Metal
Black Metal
Thrash Metal
Prog/Power

pretty much the exact opposite of Blue_Jay

It really amazes me, sometimes, how vastly different my musical tastes are from nearly everyone else here, despite considering myself a 'metalhead'. I guess I'm more of a 'classic rock fan with a strange predilection for metal'.

The main thing that gets to me about most metal is the utter lack of diversity. I can't listen to 500 different bands that all sound essentially the same. I still haven't figured out why that doesn't bother other people here. :err:

I find it interesting how black metal is the most popular genre on this board. The genre certainly has less fans than heavy metal or death metal. This forum was designed to cater to fans of all genres of metal, yet black metal seems to be the center of gravity in the collective genre pool of posters' tastes here.

@VG: Because we like it and they're all not exactly the same.

So you are saying that black metal's interior diversity of musical styles and elements is a major cause for its popularity? If so, I agree 100%.

edit: ok, you weren't replying to my post, but I stand by my statement.

It's really hard to choose between black metal and death metal, but it is definitely one of the two. I chose black metal simply because I'm listening to more black metal than anything else these days. I also like thrash and doom; particularly the more extreme bands of the two genres.

and they're all not exactly the same.

Obviously they're not all exactly the same, but the level of diversity is so minimal that, for many extreme metal bands, it's hard to tell one song apart from another of theirs without listening to them a few times. That doesn't happen nearly as often in regular rock, where bands are trying more to come up with memorable riffs/melodies than to create a 'consistent soundscape'.

vihris-gari: Listen to the formative classics of whatever subgenre you want to delve into deeper and you'll get plenty of variety.

That's pretty much where my favorite extreme metal bands tend to lie. I love bands like Bathory and Celtic Frost who have their extreme moments but exist primarily as experimental bands. There are a few other early extreme bands that I enjoy, such as Morbid Angel, Bolt Thrower, or Darkthrone.

Well I prefer having a consistent soundscape rather than an album consisting of a few good songs and a bunch of filler.
