I know each year there are a few suggestions about inserts. What do you guys recommend? The balls of my feet get sore near the end of the night and then earlier on subsequent days. What are the best inserts for this that anyone has tried?

Nothing really works mate. 3 ibuprofins and a sit down between shows is my best advice. Also, smother a thick layer of tiger balm on the ol' submarines when you go to bed.
Have had foot problems for years. Did buy a pair of Birkenstock dress shoes and they were excellent. Expensive as a bastard, but they did wonders to the feet.
I've tried all kinds of inserts. All pretty much suck. Now I actually have Dr. Scholl's tennis shoes with built in gel. Doesn't do a damn bit of good.

No, ibuprofen or Jim Beam :) works the best.

Flats. ;) I'm a big fan of Dr Scholls sports gels, myself, and they will be in my stompy boots again, this year.

This may sound funny, but I got cushy socks that work wonders. I don't remember the brand, though. :/ They are black and the soles look like they have little stripes across them width-wise. I haven't worn them for a really long period, but I did wear them with some high-heeled boots that are not particularly comfortable and my feet felt fine after standing for several hours.

I have a high instep, so with inserts, I have often found they then make the tops of my feet hurt from the added pressure. no such issues with the socks.

If all else fails, I will be there to apply Johan68's suggested cure for you. :)

get a pair of skateboarding shoes, like vans, or world industries. they have alot of padding and IMO make a big difference.

I have a foot condition called plantar fasciitus, so I use Powerstep inserts in my shoes and boots. They work pretty well, although for my feet they are not a panacea. (Nothing is.) (This site sometimes has better prices on the inserts, plus a buttload of free info on plantar fasciitus.)
They're reasonably comfortable and their sturdy construction means that even people with normal feet can benefit from the way they reduce 'rolling' of the heel.

Incidentally, if you find that you have pain seemingly from your ankle after being on your feet for a long while, then lying down or something and then getting back on your feet, you probably have plantar fasciitus. I never knew what it was until my sister described her symptoms and I thought "Hey presto, THAT'S ME!" It even cost me my first job. All that time I just thought I had weak ankles or something.....

Heel spurs? Had them & I blamed them on "bad" shoes. Started wearing New Balance shoes (I have wide feet, most athletic shoes don't come wide enough), and all is well although with all the walking & standing, your feet will probably hurt at some point or another....

Oh yeah, especially at ProgPower (and a few weekends ago, Dragon*Con).

I kinda just....resign myself to having some degree of pain in the mornings, nowadays.

Incidentally, it's not heel spurs, although plantar fasciitus is commonly mistaken for heel spurs. Hell, for years I was certain it was a problem with my ankles (the left one, mostly) and all along it was an inflammation along the bottom of my foot. Who knew? :)

Take a small, rubber mallet and hit yourself on the hand with it several times. Pretty soon, your hand will hurt so much that you'll forget about the foot pain.

You're welcome. :)

You're the BEST! I also have a high instep, and have run into the same thing. I have some socks like that that I got from Yip's mom as kind of slippers. I'll give them a test run this weekend and see how comfy they are!

Thanks much! I'll definitely check out the site.

Nope, I only get it in the balls of my feet after really long events or standing on really hard floors like concrete for a long while (Pearl Room)
The rest of my life, I wear heels almost every day and never ever run into any feet pains issues, even when I do back to back candle parties on the weekends, my feet get tired but not that ache in the ball of the foot like I get with the long concerts.

Freaky - I'll check out the sports gels too :) Thanks everyone!

I'll second the cushy sock suggestion, they are a huge help for me too. :)

My only problem with 'cushy' socks is.....they also tend to be a lot warmer since they're thicker, and hold more heat in. So it might be a trade-off. :)

I think I have an average instep 'height', but I've found that I can't wear my 'Pinnacle' PowerStep inserts in my boots, just the regular model. They work in my sneakers, though, since there's more vertical room.

I don't really notice a difference with the particular socks I have--they are just padded more of the bottom--but I see your point. :) And there have been many, many ProgPowers where I wound up taking my shoes off before getting back to my room, so it is a valid concern. ;)

Yeah, the ones I haven't aren't thicker (and warmer) all over either, they're just thicker/padded on the bottom (hence the cushy-ness); I don't notice any real difference warmth-wise between them & any other socks. I don't think I could hang with socks that were just plain thicker..too hot indeed.
