I know each year there are a few suggestions about inserts. What do you guys recommend? The balls of my feet get sore near the end of the night and then earlier on subsequent days. What are the best inserts for this that anyone has tried?

This may sound funny, but I got cushy socks that work wonders. I don't remember the brand, though. :/ They are black and the soles look like they have little stripes across them width-wise. I haven't worn them for a really long period, but I did wear them with some high-heeled boots that are not particularly comfortable and my feet felt fine after standing for several hours.
I have a high instep, so with inserts, I have often found they then make the tops of my feet hurt from the added pressure. no such issues with the socks.
If all else fails, I will be there to apply Johan68's suggested cure for you.
I have a foot condition called plantar fasciitus, so I use Powerstep inserts in my shoes and boots. They work pretty well, although for my feet they are not a panacea. (Nothing is.) (This site sometimes has better prices on the inserts, plus a buttload of free info on plantar fasciitus.)
They're reasonably comfortable and their sturdy construction means that even people with normal feet can benefit from the way they reduce 'rolling' of the heel.
Incidentally, if you find that you have pain seemingly from your ankle after being on your feet for a long while, then lying down or something and then getting back on your feet, you probably have plantar fasciitus. I never knew what it was until my sister described her symptoms and I thought "Hey presto, THAT'S ME!" It even cost me my first job. All that time I just thought I had weak ankles or something.....
I'll second the cushy sock suggestion, they are a huge help for me too.
