First black metal band ever?

It depends on one's definition of black metal I think.

If it's a rawer and thrashier version of Motorhead with cheesy "satanic" lyrics, then Venom is probably the first one, even though they're closer to heavy metal more than anything else in my opinion.
Then Hellhammer's songs were maybe the first that could be labelled as black metal in 1982, I don't know, Bathory and Sodom were also around playing similar music at the time...

But bands like Witchfynde and Angel Witch had satanic lyrics & image before Venom, so... were they black metal as well? ;)

Living Colour  (old joke I know).

It can be 'Black Sabbath', 'N.I.B.' or 'War Pigs'. It can be Witchfynde, it can be Venom, it can be Possesed. But considering how Black Metal looks today, Hellhammer most probably (more in spirit than musically).

In any case I won't worry about the first, I'm waiting for the last one :flame:

MUAAAHAHAHAHA!

Same here!

Venom introduced the Satanic stuff to it but sound wise I'd asy Hellhammer and Possesed are the most influencial. Not that I'd go by what I say because I don't like the shit.... other than Venom that is. :) But to each his own.

Amen brother, amen ;)

I'm going with Hellhammer on this one. Hellhammer had more in common with black metal musically than Venom did, as it was more raw, simpler and the guitars had more treble to it. Plus, they looked like a black metal band, sans the make-up. They also dug deeper into the satainc, anti-christ shit than Venom did. They never took it seriously, neither did Venom, but Hellhammer seemed more sincere about it, in execution. I think Venom was a HUGE influence on black metal, but i see them in black metal like i see Motorhead in thrash: If it weren't for them, you probably would have the genre, but they're not that genre. Just a key ingrediant.

Tell that to a black metal fan. The one's i've talked to put the majority of their judgement on lyrical content and if it really sticks with the satanic, pagan, anti-semetic or anti-christain ideologies of the genre. People don't put much focus on the genre musically, even thugh there ARE certain things that make black metal what it is. But according to alot of black metal "experts", it can look, sound and smell like a black metal band, but it doesn't have that all-imporant "I spill the blood of Christians and/or jews ad i burn churches, hail satan!!!!" lyrics, they just aren't black metal. Whatever. Fuck lyrics. And fuck THOSE lyrics.

i meant that Black Sabbath's lyrics were more of the "light" than "darkness" and even "christian" in some parts.
Sure especially in 'Black Sabbath' , 'N.I.B' , 'War Pigs', 'Iron Man' , 'Lord of This World', 'Heaven And Hell' , 'Die Young', 'Mob Rules' , ' Headless Cross' , ' Kill In The Spirit World', 'The Eternal Idol', 'Disturbing The Priest'.

I can concede 'After Forever' , 'Children of The Grave', 'Wishing Well', ' Into the Void' as positive songs (what's positive for you cannot be for me and viceversa).

Anyway, I wouldn't put Black Sabbath along Stryper, Bride, Guardian, Whitecross, Barren Cross, Deliverance, Vengeance Rising, Tourniquet, Logos or even King's X.

Black Sabbath may had never been openly "satanic" (that tag cracks me up :Spin: ), but they surely wasn't choir boys either :p

In any case The Supremes have satanic backward messages in their albums

none of these songs can be considered "dark" or "satanic" .. "Black Sabbath" says that oh please god help me thing, its just a fictional situation, more like storytelling .. "N.I.B." "War Pigs" is one of their "light" songs (unless you consider "satan's laughing spreads his wings" evil) "Iron Man" is just a story "Heaven And Hell" talks about the duality of all things and about not talking anything for granted and "Headless Cross" justs tells a story too. While the positive , "of light", and sometimes even "christian" lyrics are more and much more clear. Generally there was more Sabbath praying to God , than Sabbath talking about how satan rules.

Personally I don't think it gets any darker than Sabbath, as far as mood and lyrics they are the darkest... that's just me. I can listen to them and take them seriously, while Venom was over the top and a bit funny, but all of this new "black metal" of today is just totally funny. I don't like the music and the lyrics are just funny. Just my opinion, sounds like you're into black metal Iofthestorm, which is cool, but it's not for me.

so if East 17 had satanic lyrics then they would be black metal?
Hell If i know. If you read my post CORRECTLY, you would've read that I PERSONALLY think that their are things to black metal that make it black metal, not just lyrics, But from the fanatics i've talked to, no satanic lyrics="un-black". Not what i think, i'm just telling you what they said. Ask the people in the general music forum.

Seriously! As far as I can tell there are no BM fans on this board, just a bunch of old farts (and wanna be old farts :) ) that don't get it... and don't want to get it. No kidding though, I think this thread would be better off on a board where people listen to that type of music, because I'll be the first to tell you that I don't know shit about black metal.
