You can usually tell who may appreciate it. When you attempt to recommend music, you'll have some sort of dialog going to begin with. So that's when you find out what they usually listen to. If you think it'd fit, offer the salvation ;) of Opeth.

"I'm greeting my downward fall,
Leaving the throes to others."

If you like it - why not share it with others. Ultimately, you know people won't like things you like all the time, but at least you've done your job by spreading the word. One more fan for these bands may be another $10 CD sale, thus, you support your band.

I agree, but to a certain extent. If the band is very satanic in nature, I will not impose my like of the band on a person who is very religious, just as I would not want him/her to impose his/her beliefs on me.

If the death/grindcore metal band is very heavy or has an offending name (Dying Fetus, Pissing Razors, Anal Cunt), I'm not even going to push it on someone I know would be offended.

I have played Opeth and Death (the band) in my co-workers car with no problems. I knew the lyrics were not offensive, so I thought it was "safe" to do so. As a matter of fact, this co-worker was quite impressed with the musicianship of these bands.

I respect anyone who supports metal. I dont care if they go to concerts, buy CDs, are 50 yrs old or only started listening last week.

People who slag off 'metalheads' because they dont fit a percieved criteria are stupid.

It reminds me of that scene in "The life of Brian"

The peoples front of Judae are at the colloseum and they start talking about why they hate the Romans. Then one of them pipes up and says the only thing worse than the Romans are the peoples front of Judae. Even though they are on the same side there hated more than the Romans.

So yeah, spread the word.

Opeth frightens the punks that I know. One of them has a cd...26 songs...52 minutes. When I showed him Morningrise his face scrunched up as if I had just rammed a lemon up a few feet up his colon.

People can't deny the beauty of it. My mom says that some of it is "pretty", but she can't stand anything that is heavy or emotionally taxing. Britney Spears doesn't provoke a range of emotions, it doesn't dip into anger and sadness, and the songs end after 3 minutes...

Opeth is long and cerebral, so I play it for intelligent people.

Yeah but I think you have to get them "step by step" into that kind of music, if at all possible... I think for most people the "strange" vocals and the offending lyrics of many metal bands are something that keeps them from giving a band a second chance. In the beginning I didn't like the death vox either... And, of course, if you want to get someone into another style of music, that person has to be open-minded and sufficiently self-confident to leave the path of the mainstream or sub-mainstream or wherever he or she is.

She provokes at least one emotion (just from looking at her)- but we won't discuss that right now
