Been playing a LOT of old Sega games lately a-la Sonic's Ultimate Sega Genesis Collection.

Anyone else remember Flicky? How about the Golden Axe games? Shining Force 1 and 2? Goddammit this collection rules.

The only Genesis game in regular rotation at home is Gunstar Heroes.

I never played that, just googled it though. Looks kind of megaman like. Is this the case? It looks quite fun.

More like Contra or Metal Slug run 'n gun action. Has some neat mechanisms like the 4 different power up types that can be combined 2 at a time to make a variety of different weapons. Where it really shines is in the insane 2 player co-op mode where you can pick the other player up and use them as a weapon (or throw them into a pit if they are about to collect the weapon powerup you really want), and a later spaceship level (a la Gradius) where one player pilots and the other operates the guns. Also infamous for having a miniboss roughly every minute and a half.
