Glam metal was the scourge of my adolescence, but I did like some early pop metal and borderline stuff. (I'm complex.) To demonstrate, here's my take on FNM's list....

Ozzy Osbourne (1983 - 86)- Ozzy was good through Ultimate Sin
Extreme - no
Motley Crue - first three albums only (yes, three)
Def Leppard - first three albums only
Dokken - Under Lock and Key was pretty much the last good one
Skid Row - No
Poison - NO!!!
Ratt - first 2 albums only
Shark Island - who?
Slaughter - no
Cinderella - no
Bon Jovi - first two albums only
Twisted Sister - pretty much just the first 3
Quiet Riot - first 2/3
L.A. Guns - no
King Kobra - heh, yeah that was back in the day...
Kix - first couple
Guns N' Roses - hell fuckin' yeah. But first two only :p
Warrant - no
Whitesnake - fuck yeah, through self-titled
Faster Pussycat - no
White Lion - no
Autograph - first album
Dangerous Toys - no/don't know
Europe - "Final Countdown" gets a bad rap. Some of their newer stuff isn't bad, either....
Lynch Mob - not really
London - I don't think so
Yngwie Malmsteen (1986 - 92)- yes
Tora Tora - nah
Steeler - sure
Racer X - yeah
Pantera (First 4 albums) - haven't heard 'em
Nitro - please
Stryper - God no
Mr. Big - no

I think my observant friends from The Day would more or less agree with that. Though, we pretty much forgot about all of this as we got more into Maiden, then thrash....

A lot of bands who were not "Glam" bands went thru the Glam trend a bit. Kiss did it, Def Leppard did it, Whitesnake did it, Bon Jovi did it...but none of these were Glam Bands.

As for them being Metal, most of them were not, but they didn't call themselves that...the media called them that because of the time period and the fact that they played distorted guitars solos...they had to call them something.

I like most all of those bands...

They were called `Hair Metal`

They weren't that either. They had hair & guitars (but so did some of the Country bands of the time)...it was a fashion trend/tag and had nothing to do with music. These bands were Rock N Roll bands who went through image trends, like any band, but were not "Metal" at all, "Hair Metal" or otherwise. Simply Rock N Roll.

Love the following:

Bon Jovi
White Lion
Mr. Big
Def Leppard
Firehouse
Winger
Warrant
Night Ranger
Extreme
Autograph
Whitesnake
Dokken
Stryper
Cinderella

And to a lesser degree:

Motley Crue
Ratt
LA Guns
Great White
Poison

I dont really go for all this exact categorizing of artists. Bands from the 80's I still listen to now whose image incoporates a touch of glam but music I considered metal enough just a little sleazier were:
Twisted Sister
Motley Crue
W.A.S.P.
Poison
Cinderella (loved the debut, the rest, meh)
Quiet Riot
Kiss
Whitesnake
Van Halen

I like/d to a degree:
Ratt
Dokken
Bon Jovi
LA Guns
Guns n Roses
Warrant

Most suprising song from a glam band, Europe's "seven doors hotel" simply brilliant, if you havent heard it you should track it down; it canes.

some good some bad.
Ozzy Osbourne - Anything w/ Randy Rhoads. No More Tears was solid too.
Extreme - no
Motley Crue - Awesome
Def Leppard - Yeah, most of it
Dokken - Gotta love the "Dream Warriors" vid
Skid Row - Heavier than most. Really more hard rock/metal than anything.
Poison - Greatest Hits is decent.
Ratt - first 2 albums only(agreed)
Shark Island - who? terrible band name.
Slaughter - Fly to the Angels is rowkin!!
Cinderella - Had an Aerosmith feel to them. Good drinking tunes!
Bon Jovi - Buncha sally's.
Twisted Sister - Pretty annoying but Dee cracks me up.
Quiet Riot - Where Randy Rhoads got his start.
L.A. Guns - Ballad of Jayne is ok.
King Kobra - The black man's malt liquor. But Who?
Kix - Dont Close yo EYES!!!!!!
Guns N' Roses - Everything but Spaghetti Incident.
Warrant - Few tracks are ok.
Whitesnake - O' Yea
Faster Pussycat - no
White Lion - Wait is only good song.
Autograph - Turn up the Fuckin Radio!
Dangerous Toys - no/don't know
Europe - "Final Countdown" cracks me up.
Lynch Mob - no
London - Huh?
Yngwie Malmsteen (1986 - 92)- yes
Tora Tora - Wha??
Steeler - Hmmm
Racer X - Dunno
Pantera (First 4 albums) - Of course
Nitro - Never heard.
Stryper - Nope
Mr. Big - nope. Way too cheesy.

Yes I am older than the beginings of metal....older than...well you get the picture.I was a glammer for a long time, well two times because it was around with The New York Dolls...among others Strangely, including Shock rock inventer Alice Cooper. People who write music history always call bands like The Sweet and Gary pedo Glitter glam rock,it should have been called glam pop.The real glam scene was called underground or heavy or even Punk when referred to The Dolls. There was a crossover with Bowie,Mott The Hoople,Uriah Heep,Deep Purple.... all had chart hits but weren't pop bands. Then It died with Brit punk in '76.
It came back with Bon Jovi and Guns and Roses late 80's.And I got into it all again...until I got into METALLICA who I think made everything else possible by making the world aware of actual metal.
But Glam was my first love....Cinderella,Little Angels,G n R,Desperado,Twisted Sister,L.A.Guns,Extreme
Motley Crue,Def Leppard,Skid Row,Poison,Ratt,Warrant,Whitesnake,Faster Pussycat. LOVED IT.....just out of interest, the first time I heard a band referred to as heavy metal it wasn't Sabbath...it was Status Quo...same as headbanging....now I am just rambling, where's me zimmer.....

To me, "glam" or "glam rock" refers to the pre-punk, Brit movement a la Ziggy Stardust (and in contrast to its American counterpart "glitter"), while "glam metal" specifically refers to the crap we're discussing.
