GMD Poll: Top Ten Albums of 1999

Is it just me, or was this a pretty shit year for death metal?

Although in saying that there is one trash/death album that will make my list and not many others.

You’re also missing Nox Intempesta! Sort it out!

I remember that one because I discovered it was a 1999 release when trying to do my 1998 list.

Goddamn. I knew there was something significant I was forgetting. List edited again. Thanks.

Is it just me, or was this a pretty shit year for death metal? I can think of Sargantus - The Enlightenment and Immolation - Failures for Gods and I need to revisit Adramelech - Pure Blood Doom and Nominon - Diabolical Bloodshed. Is there anything I'm missing?

Check out the Disciples of Mockery and Dominus Xul albums from this year. Both are killer.

Well I take back what I said, there's lost of good to great shit this year. I initially said it was one of the weaker 90s years but I have quite a lot of to stuff to narrow down to a final list!

Nox Intempesta
Night Conquers Day
Lucifugum
Mutiilation
Lunar Aurora
Krypian's Circle
Taake
Sabbat
Demoncy
Angelcorpse
Avenger
Graveland
Frozen Shadows
Bewitched
Aeternus
Worloghe
Sargatanas
Adramelech
Slough Feg
Cranium

Doesn't have the top end of some of the other 90s years we've done, but lots of worthy stuff.

26 posts person hates Colony. Much legit, wow serious.

Didn't mean to get your undergarments in a twist old chap. Suffice it to say, while I don't enjoy the album I don't disrespect any who do. I was merely defending the honor of my virgin bride, Opeth.

I like Opeth you fucking faggot. I just think that album being #1 in 1999 is ridiculous because it's not even a top 4 Opeth album

Wrong. Regardless, outside of 2-3 albums you listed any of those would be embarassing as a #1 Metal album of the year, so to single out Opeth is unnecessary.

More like V_Frothy

Lol

Haven’t listened to Still Life in years but I remember it being quite dull and only enjoying the first two tracks. Still better than Colony and Hatebreeder, though.

Still Life is highly regarded among Opeth fans so I’m not really surprised to see it at the top of the RYM list.

Still Life is a great album. The Moor is an exceptionally crafted song, arguably Opeth’s greatest song. Godhead’s Lement, Moonlapse Vertigo, and Serenity Painted Death aren’t far behind. Then, when you take into account that it’s such a well-executed concept album, it’s hard to dismiss. While I prefer Morningrise and My Arms Your Hearse, it’s still an A album.

The Moor is really overrated - it may have one time been one of my favourite Opeth songs but it definitely wore off. It meanders way too much. I like the acoustic intro and a couple of the sections, though. Godhead's Lament is quite good, and actually you've reminded me that I like Moonlapse Vertigo, but will have to revisit it to see if I still feel the same.

Serenity Painted Death is not good, one of the worst songs from their earlier material imo.

Still Life comes off as really insincere and even pretentious, especially coming off My Arms, Your Hearse which was far more concise in its approach and actually filled with real emotion which is something I don’t get from Still Life.

Nothing on Still Life matches up to “April Ethereal”, “The Amen Corner” or “Demon of the Fall” for me. And the first two albums are filled with much better moments. I’d probably also take the peaks of Blackwater Park (The Leper Affinity, Dirge for November and the title track for me) over Still Life. But I’d need to listen to both again first before I could say for defInite.

Also, listen to that Nox Intempesta if you haven’t. Fucking rules and I’d like to know your thoughts on it. I'd also recommend Lucifugum's On the Sortilage of Christianity if you don't know it since I know you're a Nokturnal Mortum fan.
