Well no, but that is what they call all those bands that copy Incantation/Immolation after the Portal craze isn't it?

That's really all I'm saying.

So are The Chasm atmospheric death metal?

According to some people on RYM apparently. To me not really in the sense that their riffing blends death and black metal, rather than taking specifically from what bands like Immolation did. Based on what I've heard/can remember, at least. But sure, they can be, atmosphere apparently a large part of their appeal anyways.

Tbh I used to love Portal, havent listened to them much recently, but basically because they took that murky swirling death metal of Incantation to a higher level.

I guess I should step in and clarify my initial comments. When I was relistening to Close to a World Below I kept thinking to myself that this must be where Portal got their sound from. I don't know if that's actually the case, nor do I really listen much to Portal to be making such statements I suppose.

Anyway, I googled a portal song, and I can't help but feel that it does sound similar (at least the start of each song). You guys be the judge:

Do you disagree that Immolation, post-debut (which is a generic album that sounds nothing like their later output) had a higher emphasis on atmospheric, less-chuggy writing than most/all of their contemporaries?

"Atmospheric black metal" is a psuedo-genre, since all black metal creates atmosphere. It an empty descriptor. Atmospheric death metal is even less of a legitimate categorization. The fact that I've never even heard anyone but you refer to Portal, Immolation, or Ulcerate as "atmospheric death metal" while you consider these to be the cornerstones of the genre, shows just how illegitimate it is (after doing some googling, I found one user-created "Atmospheric Death Metal" list, but it's not a descriptor for the bands on Metal Archives and it isn't even a searchable genre on RYM). And no, Dawn of Possession has just as much atmosphere as their other albums. The music just isn't as good.

It's really just a new tag that's been appearing on these bands, I've seen it too. Not sure why you guys are making it into such a big deal.

Immolation isn't one just like Suffocation isn't slam death metal though.

Bands I've seen with the tag

Portal
Grave Upheaval
Antediluvian
Abyssal
Irkallian Oracle
Impetuous Ritual
Mitochodrion
Aevangelist

It's all bands playing murky nydm worship and that's what people have started calling it. It's just a name for a sub sub genre and it really hasn't even stuck much yet.

while i agree with some of that. I would say "murky nydm worship" is absolutely incorrect. Just because you're an Incantation clone band(more than a few of those listed bands are far from being btw), which im guessing is what you're again trying to say, does not make them "atmospheric death metal". But yes i agree that Abyssal, Mitochondrion, Portal are worthy of that label... but again, they are NOT Incantation clone bands. A lot of them instrumentally sound closer to Ulcerate than they do to Incantation. So are we going to call Ulcerate an Incatation clone too? Them and most of those other bands sounds almost nothing like "NYDM".

DISMA(true murky NYDM sound) IS ATMOSPHERIC DEATH METALZ TOO

For what it's worth I don't think these bands are super "atmospheric" or whatever, it's just what people are calling the bands is literally the only thing I'm saying. It's obviously nothing like atmospheric black metal which is a weird blanket term too.

I do think all the bands I listed show clear Incantation and Immolation influence (surely more so than other old school bands)
