It took a while to find a fifth album allowing me to participate in this round. Originally, I had in mind to start my post with "And now for something completely different", but after Serjeant Grumbles posted his list, this statement would be incorrect.

1. Madder Mortem - Eight Ways
2. Bergtatt - Røtter
3. Ava Inferi - Blood of Bacchus
4. Candlemass - Death Magic Doom
5. Isole - Silent Ruins

I've got a full list now - moving my previous one up here. I'll probably make a few more edits, but it feels reasonably complete.

  1. Slough Feg - Ape Uprising! (The only album from this year that I find just plain satisfying without being annoying or repetitive in some way.)
  2. Dream Theater - Black Clouds and Silver Linings (One of DT's less offensive albums, and probably the most daydreamy for me out of everything on this list. "Wither" is my favorite song - it gets its concept across concisely, without dragging on like most of the other songs.)
  3. While Heaven Wept - Vast Oceans Lachrymose (Some beautiful moments here, especially on the first song, but it gets pretty repetitive after a while.)
  4. Megadeth - Endgame (Pretty mediocre by Megadeth's standards, but still solid, and the occasionally intelligent lyrics are a breath of fresh air given this year's offerings. There had to be at least *one* metal band tapping into the political zeitgeist of 2009, for fuck's sake.)
  5. Drudkh - Microcosmos (I'm not a big BM fan, but Drudkh is less abrasive than most, and very hypnotic.)
  6. Isis - Wavering Radiant (Isis rarely impresses me, but I love their atmosphere all the same. Nothing stands out to me here versus their other albums.)
  7. Cobalt - Gin (One of the more unique BM artists I've heard. The guitar's very clear in the mix, and rocks hard in a refreshing sort of way.)
  8. Amorphis - Skyforger (I fucking love "Sky Is Mine", and there's nothing offensive about the rest of the album, though it's a bit emo overall.)
  9. Wolves in the Throne Room - Black Cascade
  10. Mastodon - Crack the Skye (These guys are interesting songwriters, but the vocals are really lame and annoying, and so prominent in the mix that it spoils my enjoyment of the instruments.)
