GREAT AMP OR GREATEST AMP? (2 ch. Recto content)

Thanks a lot Felix, I appreciate it! I spent a fair amount of time tweaking the settings, but I'd say the ends justified the means!

I think, it´s also the microphone selection and technique you use, what it makes so damn sounding good, bro. Haha I listen to your shit repeatly..it´s an enjoyment for my ears. Now it´s up to you, to bedd this kick ass sound in a good worthy project :kickass:

Thanks so much Felix, I appreciate it dude! I am pretty proud of my mic placement abilities (it was just one SM57), but honestly the thing I'm most proud of is how I tweaked the amp; since I re-amped all this I just did it over and over, trying slightly different settings until I was happy! RockGuitar, thanks dude - I'm pretty sure the pointy knobs were only on the older ones, since mine is from '95-'96 judging by the serial # (005967). And Stee, I gotta say dude, I'd accept someone saying this has too much mids (though I like 'em ;)), but I definitely wouldn't say it's at all thin! Thanks for the props on my playing though man!

Yeah, that's probably my judgement due to only having a quick listen, and not being able to turn it up much. I'll listen again tomorrow.

wow mein, that sounds pretty fucking nasty... great picking also. the 85 in the bridge helps make it so fat along with your picking. either way i have to agree on the 2ch DR being the best metal amp of all time. mesas are the best anything of all time.

Thanks a lot guys! Yeah, my respect for Mesa grows with each passing day, both for their products as well as them as a company (even if their business practices piss me off, e.g. no price negotiation, no printing of prices online, no SALES online, etc.), and honestly, while the two channels may not sound *that* different, look how freakin' differently I had them dialed in to sound similar! Just goes to show how they're two genuinely different channels, unlike on Peaveys (specifically the JSX), where I really didn't notice much of a difference between the crunch and ultra channels - sure, the ultra had a bit less mids and a bit more gain, but IMO it was pretty easy to make 'em sound quite similar; the only trouble was they both sounded like crap! :goggly: (to me, anyway, though I admit I liked Lasse's clips)

what they lack as far as online sales or price regulation the MORRRE than make up in customer service.

they are by far the most helpful of any customer service in any industry. you can call up and speak directly to mike b. who is basically the head guy over there as far as techs go. people even get the owner sometimes.

it's a pretty small company all things considered and all the techs are super cool and they really help you out and go the extra mile. between the quality, reliability, sound, and service you get what you pay for.

Yeah, I've only called once, but it was a question about this amp, so it was obvious that I didn't buy it new (since they stopped making it in '01 and all), but they were still really helpful in answering my question. Plus, that video on their main page really melts my heart and makes me feel they're like the nicest and most professional group of friendly people on earth

between the quality, reliability, sound, and service you get what you pay for.

Which isn't even that much, really (unless you're in Europe of course! bwahahahahahahaahahahahaha :muahaha: )

Thanks Mauri! Yeah, I like my mids, though I admit I'm not the greatest at judging tones from a perspective on whether they'll work in a full mix - any more thoughts guys, good or bad?

Only good, man. An amp could be not better recorded or sounding. I think you will not hear one single negative words for your work! Great Job, dude :kickass:

Hey Marcus, I'm glad you were finally able to track this thing down. Sounds amazing but expected nothing less. I wish I could steal the knobs off of that thing for my Racktifier. Those silver knobs with the slight indentation are murder for trying to keep track of my settings.

J.Davis, the Racktifier really is the greatest amp ever. I've played almost everything out there (and own a 5150 and a Boogie .50 Caliber) and while I always want new gear, this amp will NEVER be sold. So many different tones, a solid build, and great customer service make this a keeper. Running this amp through my Boogie oversized and the Engl cab that I grabbed from Marcus create a foundation shaking racket.

Hey, thanks a lot Todd! Yeah, once I got my student loan I knew I had to grab one of these, and I'm SO happy I did! I'm really glad the Engl is workin' out for ya, it really seemed like a kickass cabinet from the (brief) time I had it, and good christ, I've never had the pleasure of playing through two cabs at once, but I'll bet it's absolutely righteous! (especially when they're spread out, rather than right on top of each other).

Thanks again Felix! The next step (when I can afford it ;)) is to pick up an MD421 to mess around with!

Very welcome :) I´m just workin´on a long solo part for a song, where I used the Marshall jvm205h/recti4x12 and the Behringer v-amp pro for the solos. I´m corious, what you think about the lead sound. I will open a thread within the next hour. Rock on, dude

Hey man, cheers for getting in touch. It sounds pretty good overall. More or less how I'd expect a recto to sound out of that cab. Only criticisms are that the TS seems to be pushing the low mids to a point where they seem to almost be overloading the preamp circuit. There's a lot of that cloudy 500hz thing going on which you might find hard to seat within a mix. Other criticism is that it sounds a bit weak on the mutes, but that could be something reserved for within a mix. Sometimes the bass and kick add the punch there.

Great work though. I'm glad the amp is working out for you and your love for it growing each day. Mesa do make some amazing amps. Check out a Mark IV if you ever get a chance, I'm beyond impressed with both them and rectumfriers.

On another note, here's a dual rectifier clip a client of mine did not long ago. Unfortunately he post-processed it a little too much and sucked some of the beef out and put in too much high mid, but you kinda get the idea of the character. It speaks more toward the 'strength behind the mutes' and seating the mids differently that I was referring to: http://dl.getdropbox.com/u/285689/Killshit.mp3__audio_mpeg_Object_Killshit.mp3

Hey Marcus, we're finally mixing this weekend so I'll post a clip of the Racktifier/Mesa Oversized cab plus the Boogie 50 Caliber into the Engl Cab and then the second track with the same amps and the cabs switched. The Engl sounds amazing and I'm glad you finally have a Dual Rec. I think it's one of those amps that you keep forever and just find other amps that compliment it. I'm pretty happy with the way the 50 Caliber, which sounds more like the Mark series, compliments the Rectifier. The only other amp I have a jones for right now is a Savage 120. After hearing Goddamn Guitar's clips of that thing I need. It's gonna take a LOT of plasma and sperm donations to pay for that fucking thing!

Thanks a lot for listening Ermin! Yeah, the 500 range is precisely what I was referring to when I told Stee I'd accept if someone said it had too much mids; I'm still on the fence on that, cuz I'm not used to combining my tones with bass, and listening to things like Swallow the Sun's "Hope," for example, they seem to have as much if not more (but then again, they're music is much more slow and doomy than I write). "Watershed" too, I think, has a fair amount in that range. The TS may be to blame, but I think it's more the cab; the TS really makes the 720 range horrible (in the OP I mention I have like a 4 db cut there with a .3 Q as the only post-eq). Which of the three (Red, Orange, Red L Orange R) was your favorite? And I didn't spend NEARLY as much time dialing in the Orange, so I think I could do better with that. As for weak in the mutes, I don't really perceive that; I guess it doesn't really have that WHOOMP effect, but that's fine by me, as that tends to annoy me :) (and turning up the bass knob just makes it sound more boxy)

As for that clip, you're definitely right; it's too thin and has too much high-mid ;) (AND GODDAMMIT I AM SO SICK OF THAT SONG JESUS MOTHERFUCKING FUCK  ) I dunno, I guess I hear a little palm mute thunk, but to me it's too thin and scooped sounding, so it doesn't do much for me. You and I admittedly have different tastes (though that's why I appreciate your input so much), but while I can usually see where you're coming from with your affinities, this doesn't really do much for me. As I said above though, I'm not used to mixing my tones with bass, so I might change my tastes once I finally get around to buying one :)
