GREAT AMP OR GREATEST AMP? (2 ch. Recto content)

Hey Marcus, we're finally mixing this weekend so I'll post a clip of the Racktifier/Mesa Oversized cab plus the Boogie 50 Caliber into the Engl Cab and then the second track with the same amps and the cabs switched. The Engl sounds amazing and I'm glad you finally have a Dual Rec. I think it's one of those amps that you keep forever and just find other amps that compliment it. I'm pretty happy with the way the 50 Caliber, which sounds more like the Mark series, compliments the Rectifier. The only other amp I have a jones for right now is a Savage 120. After hearing Goddamn Guitar's clips of that thing I need. It's gonna take a LOT of plasma and sperm donations to pay for that fucking thing!

Kickass man, keep me informed! And yeah, I've had a gondo boner for the Savage for some time, it's really the only Engl I lust for but DAMMNNN have I got it bad (check out a couple of the pics on my myspace, you'll know 'em when you see 'em ;))

I've gotta track down the tone knobs on your head. I guess I'll contact Boogie this week but I've never seen them on a Boogie amp before.

Nice Savage pic on your site. When we toured a few years ago I used an Engl Blackmore and while it was a great amp, it had more of a Marshall mid range and not a ton of bottom end. Tight as fuck but hard to get used to after playing Recto's and 5150's.

This is the Goddamn Guitar Savage clip that I'm talking about:

Tight, guttural, just perfect.

Have you heard any of CJWall's older stuff, Obscura?

I was on a real Savage kick, in particular after hearing Goddamn Guitar's stuff. I then went back to the Fireball stuff Charlie posted and was like 'holytitsfuck'. Still the best tone this forum has ever seen from its users IMO. The 'walking over your sea' clip was insane. The Savage sounds a bit flat and sterile in comparison.

@Marcus: I totally appreciate that we're coming from two different camps. That was the reason for the ton of disclaimers I put up about that clip, hahah. Regardless, I think for ANY style you could definitely do with less low-mid action as that much content down there would cloud any mix. As far as the two channels go, I think in this instance I preferred the orange as it was a bit tamer and didn't have as much grain happening. Both channels are more than usable though - it's just a matter of finding application for each.

I am still amazed at how different our tastes as to what sounds good or not actually are. I'm frequently astounded when I read your posts, and it always cements in my mind that this industry is one huge 'to each their own' cliche. I'm quite glad I ran into abyssofdreams and can share extremely similar impressions of music and engineering with him. It's nice to have someone to bounce ideas back and forth with and not feel like a nimrod, as it seems my impressions don't sit in line with a majority of people on the forum.

Hey Moonlapse, Thanks for the heads up on the CJ Wall clip. Pretty fucking monstrous. Has a Meshuggah feel to it without some of the crispy digital edge to it. Such a great mix, amazing bass tone, especially at the 2 minute mark. I guess I differ from some of the guys on this forum in that I like a lot of low mid growl more than the 'Clayman' sound. It's a remarkable guitar tone but not right for the stuff I play.

I think I still prefer the Savage 120 over the Fireball. Either way it's like picking between 2 supermodels. The Savage has some kind of voodoo for me that I need it the same way a tweaker needs meth. I have 2 Goddamn Guitar clips and have spent a good deal of time listening to both of them. Hands down my favorite tone on the Sneap Forum.

Hey Marcus, better stop showing off all of that nice gear. Remember, I know where you live!!! I'm going back to the studio tonight to record vocals and mix the last 2 songs we worked on. I'll also finally have the Engl cab back as well as my 5150 combo so I can restart the Recto/.50 Caliber madness. I LOVE running 2 amps at once!

No problems man. Glad you liked it all the same. If low-mid growl is your thing maybe check out CJWall's 'Remote Floods' Clip. He did a bunch of great clips which all differ to each other in slight ways!

I did a google search and couldn't find that clip. Any possibility you could post it for me. Why not further fuel an already bad addiction. I think I need to sit in my rehearsal space, play my amps and repeat over and over again 'No more amps, no more amps' until I believe it. I don't know how I missed the great CJ Wall clips. I'm usually pretty good about checking out new tones on this site.

Ah yes, the "Remote Floods" clip - I remember, that used to impress me until I realized it was tuned to like A, so I didn't really wanna judge cuz IMO tuning things lower inherently makes them sound more awesome (until you get below A that is ;)), but really, the Fireball seems cool in a very raw and aggressive way (Todd, Scar Symmetry's first two albums are all Fireball, apparently), but I'd still TOTALLY take the Savage without a doubt (though it's also pretty much exactly twice as much dinero :(). And Todd, if I wake up to find my window broken and the knobs on my amp missing, I'm going Vigilante! :heh: And Poi, thanks dude! The riff is one of my own, though I used to play C&C Red Alert 1 and 2 like a fiend way back when, so maybe the music left its mark!

And Ermin, I always appreciate your input, and I'm glad you've found someone you can share your views with (and that if nothing else my posts are apparently good for shock value ;))
