Guitarists: legato licks?

practice doing all you're legato runs with your middle ring and pinky, no 1st finger allowed. That sure as hell builds up strength and versatility. Not exactly a performance technique though, just an exercise

Also, don't forget to check out OLD Tony MacAlpine lesson clips on youtube. I've got a worn out video tape copy of those early lessons, and it's really good stuff. Tony could play as smooth as glass.

Yo dude
I did some legato-ish licks you were on about with the occasional tap/picking in there on our album.
You might be able to figure out some licks from video like the second lick into the vid which is diminished triplet arppeggios. It's string skipping but the exact same frets on the G and E strings which has wide intervalic leaps but (once you get past the streching) is relatively easy and gives a similar sound to sweeping

Dude, good god, you can shred your spaceballs off! And yeah, the string skipping stuff is the shit, very Paul Gilbert :) Skeksis, good call on practicing without using the index finger at all, I'm sure that'll be a joy! :D Brett, damn, Vinnie Moore is a helluva player; I'm sure his music would bore me to tears (I HAET neo-classical stuff), but I can't fault his chopz!

It doesn't get much better than this

The lick around 0:40 is awesome - love the majestic-ness of the last few notes.

Finally someone brings up Richie Kotzen.

He's the first person that comes to mind other than Alan Holdsworth that are exellent Legato players.

And I dont even count Dime or any of the other guys mentioned because they barely use it for a few seconds where as Richie can play for huge runs with out using his right hand at all.

Look up the song Chype Flux from the Guitars That Rule The World Compilation CD By Guitar Wold Magazine. Some Awesome Legato work on that one.

Lots of other cool tracks on that Disk like Black Magic by Reb Beach.

Wow, I need to go man up a little now..... lol
