Just because there has been little controversy and heated discussion does not means is shit. If you enjoy those things start them, if you are bored live, if you dislike threads ignore them there is a solution for everything ( well in your case at least )

It's not about controversy, or heated discussions. It's about the mindless crap that one reads in this forum and that have little to do with Opeth or Music for that matter.
As far as your solution, I've noticed a lot of May people are not posting anymore. That ain't good.

@Wolff: I gues we have different views, an Opeth forum is just a place to talk to people with the difference that there is something in common, but like every group of people in life is impossible to go on talking just about music forever. But if that is what you like you are in your every right to do so, im just stating that since a lot of people seems to think like me ( granted a lot others not i did noticed people missing ) maybe is not your ideal place to be? not that im saying anything by that but if you are so bored you should do something about it how much fun can an insulting post be? well a lot actually but it will grow old too eventually
its no way crap but i have to say it was better when i first started posting here. BUT i know (notice i say know not think) thats because before i had loads of questions and everyone answered them but when the new album comes out i predict a rise in talk.

scoff if you want, but it seems that the ability of a member to engage in stimulating conversation is directly correlated to his/her knowledge of opeth. as more and more quasi-fans have come to the board for the "scene," the depth of topics has shrunk. i've noticed my own posting becoming more trivial, and therefore plentiful, because the topics don't require formulating an argument.
i wouldn't want the board to be all about music. i have loved the religious/political debates we've had. i'm just not interested in how many times people brush their teeth, for instance.
(actually, i don't mind the guy that started that one, so it's not really a good example. but it's an example i can offer without truly singling out extremely immature people.)
oh well. i just hope that the wonderful people i've met on here don't leave. stand your ground!

I can say that i've been here for quite some time ,,,, longer than the most of you ,,and it has become worse yes ,,, but it still is better than alot of forums ,,,,when I first came here I basically lived here ,, just stayed on here and posted and checked my posts every 5 minutes to see if someone replied ,, which they always did because we knew each other ,, we have lost some good members ,,,,and we have found some real disapointing members ( who , with my help, have been kicked off for a while) . Anyway when I first came here you had to put some thought in to what you said and concider alot of thing before you made a post ,, we had some rules and shit ( which turned into post's sometimes) ,,,anyway what I was saying was ,,, before the post were more greatly structured ,,,, now they are just put together in a very short time and half the people on here don't even read em ,,,, and a quarter of the people hear just read posts anyway .... grr r
Well I'll be damned if you're not the author of the majority of these crap threads with little substance. And judgeing by the last few pages of the board you are! It seems you've bit your tongue, smitten your face, and thrown stones at yourself all at once. Idiot.

I think it's just different, and the music topics have been somewhat exhausted. I've also noticed a lot of the Christian Opeth fans have just left during the religion threads, and we lost some other people during the September 11th threads. A lot of new people have joined that we don't yet know very well, I think that in time we will get to know the new people that have "replaced" a lot of the people who left, then especially with the DOUBLE release coming up, the board will come to life again. Too bad the double release is quite a ways off 
. This board is still a GREAT place to find out about music you would never discover otherwise, a lot of what I listen to is due to this board, I will continue posting here unless it turns into a complete toilet. It's true that posts are requiring less thought and short answers than before, I'm guilty of replying with a lot of short, unthought-out answers, but that's usually only on the Elephants playing Basketball thread, or something similar to that.

If anything, this board has increased in diversity and the intellectual conversation is still present throughout the BB, and the nonsense is kept to a comfortable minimum. So my answer is a resounding no.

Yeah - the May people post less, and it would "seem" that the threads of the old days have dissapated, but that's just based on pure #'s. There are more "pointless" threads started here, but I answer those too, so what does that say about me?(one of the May people?).
I like it here, and hope we don't deteriorate into those other boards we all seem to hate.

i didnt really talk that much when i first got on the boards...
i am trying to refrain from getting in anymore heated debates though. id rather talk about fun things and music.

there have been more pointless threads recently, but there has been more threads in general...i don't think the actual % has increased...unfortunately most boards get worst as they get older...

Birth: you set up a board on a certain subject...say cheese.
people with an interest in cheese slowly begin to come to the board, posts are pretty much limited to the board topic...but due to the small numbers of ppl there are few replys and conversation is limited...some ppl leave as its too quite
Childhood: board has a reasonable and growing number of members, all of whom joint because of they're love of cheese...conversation for the most part is on cheese (and perhaps other related dairy products)...the concentration of so many ppl with a strong interest in cheese means that there is much informed debate and ppl are introduced to news ways of thinking about cheese
Maturity: board now has many members, some of whom have know each other on the board for quite a while...these ppl form cliques and have private discusions on the board...many of the cheese related topics have been done to death, and are only brought up when a) a new member joins (only to be told that the topic has been discused and no one can be bothered to do it again) or b) for a brief period when there is exciting cheese news. other than these ocasions ppl on the board are tide of cheese discusion and prefere to talk about other things, such as other ppl on the board, soon ppl are posting things like "Poll: who's the coolest member" etc....new posts about cheese are ignored as ppl feel they've seen it all before even tho it was posible they might have learnt something new, new members are discouraged by the lack of attention to the cheese threads (and sometimes open abuse from older members...based of things like member number, joining date, no of posts etc.) many leave after a few posts...some members write long dreary posts about the state of the board
Death: board is now just a hang out for a small clique of internet friends to discuss their, increasingly tedious, lives with each other, the subject of cheese is rarely brought up...many members are no longer even interested in cheese but just stay because they know so many ppl on the board...the threads are filled with private jokes and bitching
i've seen this happen to several boards...the best example i think is the uni of Bristol's rock music society board (RockSoc)...it has about 20 seperate forums, only 1 is for music (gets about 1 post a day)...all the others are just general non-music chat, it even has 2 seperate forums just for bitching and insulting each other...and nearly all the active members left uni ages ago and just use the forum to keep in touch with 'friends'...it could happen here, familarity breeds contempt...as soon as one person posts a 'a took a really large dump today' thread there is no going back...
