I've been listening to Opeth for a while but sadly am still a little ignorant to death metal/black metal/doom metal or whatever it can be classified as. can you guys recommend some bands that linger around these styles? Such as Cradel of Filth, Dimmu Borgir, In Flames and whatnot. I know there is no such thing as an opeth copy, Im just asking about other evil sounding bands that play with many musical dynamics. Please no bullshit like cannable corpse. Melody is the key here.

Try November's Doom. They have their own forum here at UltimateMetal.com. They are an excellent band. You may like Daylight Dies as well (and they also have their own forum here).

It's very hard to find a band as brilliant as Opeth, but there's a good amount of great metal out there. Just keep digging.

Here's a few bands from a few catagories that you can check out.
Death Metal:
Morbid Angel
Cryptopsy
Vital Remains
Amon Amarth (Band that Martin Lopez was in prior to joining Opeth)

Black Metal:
Mithotyn
Venom
Dissection
Immortal
Celtic Frost
Mayhem
Bathory

Power Metal:
Iced Earth
Symphony X
Nocturnal Rites
Dark Moor

Doom Metal (I don't really know much about this catagory)
My Dying Bride

Enslaved
Borknagar
Agalloch
Novembers Doom
Katatonia
Finntroll
Solefald
maudlin of the Well / Kayo Dot
Nevermore
Death
Emperor
Dissection
Ulver (metal and non-metal)
Sigh

Ah Mallus.... FINALLY someone realizes their brilliance.

If you want brilliant, intricate death-metal stylings, go for the Karelian Isthmus. Comparable to some early Opeth

Ir you want their breakthrough album, very experimental for them, go for Elegy. Trippy atmosphere with death style vocals.

If you want their full progression into prog-rock, go for Am Universum. This is good music to settle your mind to.

But Elegy, I'd say that one's their best after Tales from the 1,000 Lakes. Karelian Isthmus closely ties it.

For great melodic metal you can't go wrong with Hollenthon, Edge of Sanity or Katatonia. Agalloch is also great, yet not so metal.

And if you want pure 70's Opeth-infulencing prog, Camel is a great choice.

Im going to add to this by saying check out anything by Dan Swano, especially his Moontower and Nightingale albums. Next check out Agalloch's The Mantle, and check out In Flames The Jester Race. Also, lately I have been really getting into Pain of Salvation, so check them out too.

My vote also goes to Agalloch...

For the more extreme stuff there's:
Astriaal (HIGHLY recommended aussie black metal)
Emperor (black metal)
Zyklon (death metal)
The Legion (black metal)
Immortal (black metal)
Naglfar (black metal)
Windir (black metal)
Psycroptic (the best aussie death metal)
Ragnarok (black metal)
Dissection (death/black metal)

And the less extreme stuff:
In Flames
Arch Enemy
Anathema
My Dying Bride
Dark Suns
Ephel Duath
Pink Floyd
Porcupine Tree
