I am not surprised at ALL. I have a friend who's exactly like you. Well except he is going to college, but when he does it will be solely for the purpose of getting a job that lets him enjoy himself. If I were you that's what I'd do. For example, you need money for music right? You're obviously decent at expressing yourself through writing. If you went to a cheap city college for 4 years (you probably wouldn't need more than 3) you could easily graduate and within time get a job as a music critic. If you're like the other people on forums who have personalities that are almost exactly the same as yours, you use a file sharing program to download tons of music a day, and you listen to it. You could do the same for a magazine of some sort, and write reviews about it, and be told to interview bands, and write about it, and be told to find out about tours, and write about them, etc. Chances are you'd enjoy yourself more than with data entry, no? You probably knew about all of that, but the point is you could probably get plenty of use out of college, while only putting in 4 years of minimal work into it.

Not everyone suits college remember. Though i think university is damn useful, however you found school (and uni sure as hell is not the same as school), people shouldn't go just for the sake of going. If you go to college it should basically be out of interest in learning about a subject, not just to get a piece of paper. Some people get far more out of trying different jobs and gaining firsthand experience. Some prefer polytech. Some do apprenticeships. Hell, some do menial data entry to save cash before they decide what they want to do with their lives.
However, uni still pwns. I love talking about whether Saudi Arabia is headed for collapse. I love learning Russian. I love understanding the theory behind International Law without the need for an international police force. Have you ever thought about looking into creative design or writing courses Trey? You seem like you might be pretty good at it.
Oh, and fuck having cash; Ive got an overdraft to cover my cd-buying expenses.

i think your attitude could be part of the issue...

sounds like you don't want to learn ANYTHING. is there anything in the world you'd like to learn more about/get good at doing?

Yeah, but in uni you actually have people wanting to see your stuff, then comment on how awesome it is. And i meant Russian language, not Russian politics. Another guy in my class found an entire dictionary devoted to Russian swear words in the library. My god, you wouldn't believe how many words they have for tea bagging....

so... you'd like to learn about _________, but you don't want to pay for it.

i'm sure there are people who'd love to teach you about it, but they need to make a living too so... you get the point. this isn't to say that university isn't overpriced. i hardly think all the money i pay goes to good use, but some of it does. as long as i use my time here wisely thats what matters.

Drop the forum persona for a second... If you really believe half the shit you write you desperately need to leave your room, your keyboard, and just observe other places, and how the world operates. Narcissism will get you nowhere- so you dont give a fuck? Guess what, with that outlook, no one gives a fuck about you either. You cant quit the game of life, you simply lose.

If you want to spend the rest of your life mindlessly pounding away on the keyboard, fine by me; you and I both know that your rationalizations for ignorance and isolation are simply masking profound insecurity and self loathing. More pointless sigs please.

^ good points J.

edit: also, it's really frustrating taking classes and not knowing what you want to do in life :(
i suppose i'm going because i hope that i'll get some sort of degree, to get a decent job, as opposed to getting a not so good one, with no schooling.
i remember in high school, i had no desire to go at all. it's weird, i didn't hate HS like most kids, i didn't really mind going, and always was on honor roll, C's were rare for me. i really have no idea what i'd like to do, but i know one thing: i don't care if i make A LOT of money, but just enough to be comfortable..my main thing is i just want to be happy in life.

i hated high school with passion, i was an average student. i got into university on my senior high school project (i built a custom electric guitar from scratch with hand tools) and my SAT scores likely. my mission here is to learn everything i can so that i can get a good job and not have to go to grad school or end up doing something i hate. i refuse to take a job i won't enjoy. school is at times a pain, but i like to think that i'm more of a pain to them in that i don't accept anything they tell me at face value. i make them break the rules for me because i said so. (it may help that the dean and i became friends.)

i agree with crimson that i just want to find happiness and stick to it, no need to be rich.

Four years at a liberal arts school is the best thing that ever happened to me. I used to be a severely close-minded, self-righteous prick.

As far as motivation, I'm delving into an industry where your own initiative and social contacts determine your place in the hierarchy. No 9 to 5 desk job, oh no. Definately have to expect the worst and still be able to be content with it (love what you do, but get paid next to nothing for doing it).

So why exactly did you pay to become a premium member?

As an old bastard, for many years I have had a joke definition of a typical student (the combination of lack of talent and experience with arrogance). I am surprised that so many of the people on here are students because there seems to be only one person that fits my definition...

I think one of the keys to happiness in life is loving what you do for a living. Having a job you despise is terribly unhealthy with all of the stress that goes along with it. Fortunately, I really enjoy my job and the pay isn't too shabby.

As much as I loved college I'm really glad to be done with it. I was so sick of classes and tests by the end of my senior year. So all you kids have fun. It's a great experience.
