Long story short:

Since I started listening to Opeth I've become more and more interested in progressive music (rock), bands that I had never heard of; Camel, Pink floyd (yes I know), Yes etc am I now a frequent listener of. There seems to be a lot of progheads on this forum so I figured this is a good place to inquiere from where I might find the history and background of the progressive music. I have a genuine interest in learning more of this, in my opinion, ultimate type of music. Any tip of any book/website/whatever would be very much appreciated!

thanks!

For me it's kind of different. Because of Opeth, I'm more interested in these modern (late 80s, early 90s) prog bands, that have more to do with metal than rock. That isn't to say I couldn't get into the older ones...I still want to try them too. However I have to many bands to listen to thoroughly before doing that.

only prog album i ever listen to anymore is thick as a brick by jethro tull, and i guess aqualung sometimes too

thanks for all the helpful replies, progarchieves really has a lot of information. Gonna go over to my local university library and search some there as well for some literature

This might be a given. But you have listened to Porcupine Tree? It might not be very good if you want the history of prog, but they do encompass the most influences in their music that I have ever heard.

Yeah I listen to PT, although not very frequently (I prefer the a bit more harder tool) but I have a deep respect for SW
